I've seen these pics before but i've never found out why senna rode mansells car. I have watched a few old F1 seasons on Motors TV but they've all been way before that. More around the time one of my fav drivers was racing (James Hunt "the Shunt")

No usually it was given to drivers having retired and that waited on the side of the track 'til the end of the race for some fellow driver to carry them to the pits.
As it was dangerous (although I don't remember any actual accident) the FIA outlawed it...

Yes Senna retired from that race and NM picked him up after he won.

Its actually really funny to watch the vid because Senna kicks a marshall away who tried to stop Senna doing this.

How interesting, I thought Masell and Senna were main rivals. Especially their duel in Bacerlona 1991. Tough to find a picture with Senna sitting on Mansell's car

Rivals can still have a healthy respect for each other.

The last time I remember this happening was Giancarlo Fisichella getting a lift back with Michael Schumacher in Hockenheim back in '97

I was at Silverstone sitting on the banking at Club, I think Senna's car failed at Becketts (gearbox?) Mansell gave him a lift after the race was won.............

Two great drivers

I don't know why this reminds me, but a little tale that really shows that drivers needed skills that aren't required anymore. I used to race MX with a chap who got the job of building gearboxes at McLaren - and he was Senna's gearbox man (I think he is still there BTW). When Berger was Senna's team-mate apparently the comparision in gearbox condition after a race was something to behold. Berger's - lucky to make the end; Senna's still like new..............I have heard that Mansell was also good with his gear-changes.

These are skills cannot be seen outside the cockpit, but to me mark some of the difference between the great and the merely good.

Indeed, that also what they said about Fangio's engines - after the race they were in much better condition than his teammates. Perhaps that is what makes this "strange" difference between Alonso and Fisichella too

Exhaust wasn't upwards as it is now.

It wasn't a marshal trying to stop Senna but fan who grabbed Mansell's helmet.

I'm with you there, even with modern gearboxes; I'm sure drivers can place different loads on the engine. How about all Sato's failures in the BAR compared to JB. Not by chance I'm sure that the "team leaders" tend to be "lucky" with reliability

More seriously, I did a tally of the race failures of Kimi versus his team-mate from 2001 to 2004, and it was Kimi 11, team-mates 2 IIRC.

450% more the number of engine failures of your team-mate is not purely down to 'luck'.

Yeah - 'zactly..........and what about the CV joint at Imola? I heard the team had warned him to go a bit easy on the kerbs........Ok he deserves a car that takes it...but would Alonso have driven so hard in a car that was probably going to walk it anyway
