Renault R31

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I think brake ducts on this photo are bigger than their usual ones.

R31 did not deliver in Monaco, whereas a lot of people had high expectations.

What do you think are the possible causes for this low-key performance?

I have to think that the FEE layout did not work well in low speed corners, converse to the thinking. Just speculation but it shoots out too much to the sides at low speed to seal the deck. Perhaps readjusting the angle of exit could help with lower speed circuits.

It would seem odd that the team would not know this and have made the correct adjustments.

Agreed, but maybe it's something that is not easily replicated in the models or CFD.

That's an interesting variant on the McLaren airbox – does anyone know, do the two side intakes go to different places?

James Allison:
Montreal requires a medium-low level of downforce and this is the first circuit of the year to have this requirement. This means we will debut a new rear wing, and this will incorporate a new DRS which loses more drag when it is being utilised. In addition, we have a new front wing to complement the downforce levels of the rear and there will be various other refinements on the car, with particular emphasis on ensuring there is good airflow to assist with brake cooling.

On Monaco.. it's their mechanical traction.. I am pretty sure they are faster than Sauber, so that's my guess.

main problem of the car is that R31 have more aero then mehanical grip (this year). witch is weird because last few years this was opposite case. LRGP is on good way now, with updating aerotunel and simultor this are very good news, at least better news than Ferrari and Mercedes.
