David Richards is back!

Richards' Prodrive entry accepted for 2008
The FIA has confirmed that David Richards' Prodrive outfit has been accepted as the 12th team entry for the 2008 championship. The sports' governing body received 22 entries for 2008, including former team bosses Paul Stoddart and Eddie Jordan, but ex-BAR (now Honda) chief Richards got the nod.

"Prodrive has the best combination of financial backing, technical capability and motor sport experience and is well known to the FIA through its participation in the World Rally Championship," said FIA president Max Mosley. "Also, Prodrive's chief executive, David Richards, has experience as a Formula One team principal."

Mosley confirmed that all of the current 11 teams had submitted entries and an additional 11. Further financial commitment and motorsport experience information was requested from the candidates and a fax vote of the World Motor Sport Council gave Prodrive the 12th entry.

"The World Council concurred that there was no reason not to accept the current teams as they are already in the championship and have confirmed their ability to compete effectively," Mosley added. "Prodrive was chosen mainly because of its financial position, capabilities and experience."

Richards, naturally, was delighted: "This is wonderful news for everyone in the company," he said. "We always wanted to be in Formula One with our own Prodrive team and now we are one step closer. We now have less than two years to build a team and put two competitive cars on the starting grid. The task is enormous but we relish the challenge."

The limit of 12 teams for 2008 was imposed due to circuit facilities and commercial considerations, and the limit is unlikely to increase in the future. "It would be very difficult to enlarge the facilities and we would also have to look very carefully at the safety issue," Mosley said.

Not only Sotddart and Jordan were hopefuls for 2008; reportedly ex-drivers Eddie Irvine and Jean Alesi were on the list, along with former MF1 sporting director Trevor Carlin. Mosley said the unsuccessful applicants could still have a slight chance.

"We informed all the teams that were not successful, although we did not tell them which teams were," he commented. "We asked them to keep in touch in case a vacancy occurred."

Mosley believes the FIA's new rules for 2008 encouraged so many entries. "The 2008 Sporting Regulations have reduced the cost of competing and should improve the sporting spectacle at the same time," he said. "It makes for a very attractive prospect."
I'm very excited, I hope they can build a decent chassis in time. Also, who's going to be their engine partner, Subaru? Don't think so. Honda probably hates it that DR is back. Maybe Toyota. Or possibly Cosworth, Cosworth and Prodrive would be awesome.
I love to love Senna.

I believe Richards has already spoken to Cosworth about providing an engine.

Of interest is the fact that, as well as Prodrive, the Midland, Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Williams teams have listed engine suppliers as 'To Be Announced'.
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

I happen to accept that, because there was no news of him renewing his contract anyway.

BTW, that the people that bough over the team has the power to get new people in, they don't want Dave Richards so they sacked him. Dave Richards is a former Benetton team principal but he did not finish the season though.

Honda is competetive even without Dave Richards, and he has the money to build his own team. Good Luck for 2008 seaason

David Richards laid down a five year plan to Rocco Benetton and told him basically that if you do everything I say and follow this plan to the letter then Benetton will be winning races and championships by the end of it. Rocco Benetton thought soon after that he knew best so gave Richards the flick. Same story with Honda. 'Why are we paying this guy, we can do this without him' sort of thing.

…Prodrive. Former BAR team boss David Richards is set to return to the Formula One grid after it was confirmed on Friday that his Prodrive motorsport group have had their entry for the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship accepted. Prodrive will join the existing 11 teams, all of whom have retained their places in the series.

“This is wonderful news for everyone in the company,” Prodrive chairman, Richards, told the group’s official website. “We have won World Rally Championships, British Touring Car titles and the GT1 class at Le Mans, and have been saying for some time that we would also like to be in Formula One with our own Prodrive team. We are now one step closer.”

Prodrive’s previous Formula One involvement with BAR spanned the 2002, 2003 and 2004 seasons, during which time they managed the team, taking them to second place in the constructors’ championship in their final year, prior to Honda’s takeover. Richards was also team principal for the Benetton’s Formula One squad back in 1998.

Prodrive are currently awaiting planning permission for a new purpose-built facility in Warwickshire in the UK where they plan to house their Formula One operation. Should that permission be granted, the group intend to commence construction at the end of this year. In the meantime, Prodrive will run their Formula One programme from their existing facilities in Banbury.

“An entry is just the beginning,” added Richards. “We now have less than two years to build a team and put two competitive cars on the starting grid for the first race of the 2008 championship. The task is enormous and the expertise and experience of the established teams well recognised. However, Prodrive has more than 20 years of motorsport experience and all of us relish a challenge.”

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, is introducing new regulations for the 2008 season, designed to make the sport cheaper and more accessible to smaller teams. This prompted no less than 22 entries for the 2008 championship, with Trevor Carlin’s Carlin’s Carlin Motorsport and former Minardi boss Paul Stoddart among those to miss out.

“We are confident that the new regulations will not only allow Prodrive to be competitive on an affordable budget, but will also make Formula One more exciting and, ultimately, even more entertaining for spectators and TV audiences around the world,” concluded Richards.

Since their formation in 1984, Prodrive have won more than 200 international rally and race events, including six World Rally Championship titles, five British Touring Car Championships and a GTS class win at Le Mans in 2003.
