british press and jenson button!

this is a question to all those brits in this forum. why do ur press overrate your sportsman and then piles the pressure on them!?
this can be seen with jenson button.. i am a huge football fan i get my scores and story in the bbc website. and as long as i can remember there is at least 1 article a month discussing jenson button and his chances to become a race winner and a world champion!! i think the british press has itself to blame for putting too much pressure on their sportsman.. thats why i think henman lost his chance in wimbeldon and now button isnt goin to win wdc

The RA106 has excellent reliability and test results, if JB does not stand a chance this year, next year he can still do it.

BTW that JB is only 26, give him some time. Seeing his consistent results this season I think he has a chance next year. Honda is the best engine maker in my opinion, JB can do it and he is still young though.

Jenson Button writes on a regular basis for one of the british newspapers, and in his weekly column he himself says that he can win at the next race as well. He does fuel these stories himself. If you look at other british drivers such as Coulthard he just gets on with the job.

I'm a British person( ) and I hate the British press. They wildly exagerate everything. i.e. headline: MAN ARRESTED ON TERRORISM CHARGES FOR PLAYING THE CLASH!!!

Real story. Police pull a man over for heading to London playing 'London's calling', BECAUSE IT WAS TOO LOUD! When he started being abusive the police hauled him in so he went to the papers with this crap.


In Britain many people have an unfair idea that they are better than everyone else. They make out the French are arrogant (I've never seen evidence of this), most of Europe is full of rude people (no ruder than they are) and the Americans are the only people who come close even though their leader is clearly a monkey. As a result they expect their sportsmen and women to be the best, some of them are (Kelly Holmes, Steve Redgrave, David Coulthard) and when they aren't they pounce on them and demand to know why.

Also there are so many papers in Britain that of course some are going to be for and against drivers. Hey, we're famouse for it.

The British press is very competitive so they'll say anything to get the attention of a reader and sell a newspaper. You only need to look at the daily news to see how this style of journalism has flown through to the sports pages.

Thus magazines like F1 Racing and Autosport have to 'match' this to compete, although I think the latter is much better in this respect.

It is unfortunate and in some ways disrespectful to the sportsmen themselves, but there are a couple of good newspapers, which may cost a few pence more, but reward you with a better, less sensational read on all subjects.

From a Brit living in Belgium; I had a chat with someone the other day who said that people ought to start telling Jense that he is rubbish - perhaps then he might respond with a little aggression!

In any case it is a trait fof the British Press that they build up the underdog and if he then becomes successful takes enormous pleasure in knocking him back down. I have no clue why they do this - but there is something similar with brits arrested abroad (they can't possibly be guilty!!) and also if there is a disaster they are really only concerned about how many Brits might have been killed or injured - no need to worry about johnny foreigner!! It's very sad and I often feel embarassed by proxy!

But they never fall! When they see they're about to fall they just find a scapegoat and knock him or her down, like the England manager.

If the public punished them by not buying the newspaper then we would have better quality journalism. Unfortunately they do not
