Mercedes AMG F1 W03 (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So McLaren Ferrari and Mercedes all build cars, yet it's a vanity project for Mercedes?

Did you not see the name change to Mercedes-AMG? AMG is positioned as a brand to counter Ferrari and McLaren.
This is strategic and in no way different from what McLaren or Ferrari are doing.
The age old argument of these teams selling cars to fund race activites is dead.

JET - With Ferrari & MacLaren the car and F1 team are in the same location, run with the same culture, founded by the same people. They are of comparable scale.

That's not the same a mass production company buying up a bespoke F1 team.

Who's to say?

Just because Mercedes decided to buy an existing set up instead of blowing 500 million doing it themselves ?
And AMG is not mass market.

You maybe able to buy AMG wheels and trims, but this is not a bespoke AMG.
Any more than the Ferrari fiat 500 is not a Ferrari.

In the end Mercedes have launched AMG to counter its on track rivals. Otherwise I would agree it. Otherwise I would have agreed about this being a Benz vanity project.

I would like to add to my theory, when the mothership finally gave in on the conceptual influence on the car and allowed Brackley to hire established Technical directors, they also distanced the team itself by giving it the AMG moniker.

When one continuously repeats this sentiment, it exhibits a complete lack of understanding regarding MBz culture or how they and AMG are perceived by their fans. How can one claim to know *anything* about this team when they so blatantly and stubbornly insist on confusing AMG with something like Brabus?

Oh my, I guess that makes me a non-fan then, but surely the team is not only for the already saved?

Omnicourse is claiming that Mercedes has a secret solution that it doesn't want people to know, hence skipping the first test.

You would expect them to be fourth with the budget and resources they have versus the teams behind them and the management of Renault/Lotus/Whatever being in disarray. What people don't seem to want to face however is what's being done with the budget and resources available to them relative to other teams. They just don't seem to be getting any closer to McLaren or Ferrari, never mind Red Bull.

It amuses me no end that you can see LRGP are going through a tumultuous time, yet you cannot fathom the Honda/Brawn/Mercedes metamorphosis was even more disruptive.

Typical, I'd take this with a grain of salt and hold my breath while doing it. There could be truth to this, but I'd put money on the fact that MGP are skipping the first test to optimize their car in the windtunnel.

I'm with you there, I only put so much stock into Omnicourses stories. And I agree that they more than likely want the extra time to develop the car. But honestly if anyone is going to have a secret or groundbreaking solution for 2012 Mercedes ranks at the top of my list.

Managing expectations is important after missing targets in 2010/11.

I go with merc honing the car for the extra tenth, and then test it.
IF they have something it's been kept quiet.
