Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000
Now add 10. What is the total?

The correct answer is actually 4100.

What's to explain? It's just adding the numbers

add the thousands, this equals 4000. (1000+1000+1000+1000=4000)
add the tens, this equals 100 (40+20+30+10=100)
add them together should equal 4100 (4000+100=4100)

the way the question is worded however means that you reach 4090 when you are told to add 10. In your head the first thing you think of is 5000.
