Strad - very interesting indy videos indeed (1960, 1970 and beginnings). Where are they coming from ?

As a young kid, I had mainly written report about the 500 back in 70's. I remember the 1971-72-73 races with the big Mc Laren M-16 Offy, Dan Gurney's Eagle (200 mph - 1000 HP). After the 1973 Swede Savage (STP Eagle), the indy racing changed a lot (smaller wings, smaller tank, waste-gate, + improved Brickyard, quali and so on) for satety reasons but the racing was still okay.

I am a fan of the pre 80s and especially the early years when it was still a grueling test of both man and machine....
But I can see why you'd like early 70s with the variety and innovation...

Waow. Thank You. I mean the Cosworth DFX, the Coyotee, the Lola, the Mc Laren M-24, the Penske PC6 (beautiful and very similar to the F-1 winning PC4)and their drivers Andretti, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, Dallenbach, Foyt, Johncock, Mears, Rutherford, Sneva were not bad at all.

The Pandora Box (of ground effect indy cars) was opened with the Chaparral 2K and the indy racing was never the same again...

Penske probably liked 72 better...
I hope these help fill the void til the season starts

What a race ! Thank You again...

I forgot about the Parnelli VPJ1 designed by Maurice Phillippe with its original diehedral aerofoils (side force-producting aerodynamic device) with engine oil coolers inside and active camber adjustment. This was a total failure.
But I think it could have worked if the drivers had a better confidence factor with its handling. The drivers just never drive that car to the limit...

We can see the diehedral aerofoils at 01:53 (Al Unser's VPJ1 number 1) and at the end (09:20 Mario Andretti's VPJ1 number 4).

What's next ? The incredible 1973 race ?

73?
“This is what everyone has feared! This is why there’s been such a terrible atmosphere of fear here all weekend long!“ – Jim McKay, calling the Salt Walther crash on Monday, May 28, 1973

Despite the nature of the accident he had described above, little did Jim McKay realize just how deep that statement would ring true for the 1973 Indianapolis 500.

Pretty much every Indianapolis 500 aficionado whose memory goes back to the 1970s knows that the 1973 Indy 500 is generally regarded as the worst 500 ever; claiming three lives, taking three days to run, a dozen or so spectators injured, a driver disfigured, and the race never going the full 500 mile distance.
Sure...

Very interesting indeed. Do you have some more Indy 500 racing coverage after 1960 or 1973 ?
