Lotus E20 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Those are quite meaty brake ducts.

The letters on shirt - Lotus is either embroided or printed, while Total is just a cheap sticker. I think we should expect major reduction of petrol prices due to this cost-cutting move.

I think that is is smaller version of hole.It should look more open from front view.Maybe they brought more than one versions of front wings.

Could someone circle that hole for me? The only one I see, is the cooling opening under the nose.

What is the idea behind that hole underneath the hole?

Just driver cooling (most people presume), it might just give little advantage, but it's the best way to place it.

Cooling, probably for KERS.

I think, he was asking about the hole in the splitter.

Why is E20 having so big sidepod inlets? Last year R31 had FEE so i thought it was beacuse of it.

It's a mistery... let's wait for the GP to get some photos of the car naked... AMuS says maybe the E20 'secret' is under its skin and Allison says they focussed on the inner aero and changed it completely...

i just want to see their new exaust system  in jerez and barcelona they had original launch configuration, and on top of that car was not bad at all. i think e20 is much better car then R31, obviously they eliminate all the disadvantages of R31 and focused on aero of new car. i'm interested what are benefits of car :)

Quite frankly, I think there's more to gain with the aero under the skin of the car than over it. Everyone has already optimized the way air flows around the car, but you don't hear about optimizing the flow through the chassis. There's a lot of drag that could be shed, and some downforce to be gained.

Agreed, looking at the image of the VJM05 when it lost half an engine cover really proved how important internal aerodynamics are now.

Sidepods by there very nature, should create lift, so reducing that, and reducing the massive internal drag as much as possible, will increase the efficiency of the car. Simple? Not really.

I still think that Lotus' exhaust system is much better than McLaren's and Red Bull's second version. This configuration of Lotus' exhaust is simmilar to Red Bull's first version. It is simple. As we can see from many pictures, hot exhaust gases go right on small wing above diffuser. That creates quite big amount of downforce.About McLaren's version, and Red Bull's B version... you can't just like that control and point these gases.Come on, they have so much energy. These gases have speed of about 600-700km/h and 900 degrees Celsius temperature.
