Re: Scuderia Ferrari 2012 - not the car!

Post

I'm not sure that the Ferrari is particularly agreeable with the tyres, more that they've been extremely efficient with everything else apart from sheer pace. With Alonso they've been able to capitalise most of the time on the issues others are having with various things, which simply would not have been the case if their pitstops, starts, strategy hadn't been generally pretty spot on (with a few exceptions, granted).

What I think a lot of people are missing, however, is how important it actually is to be running at the front. I'm not sure Vettel's race pace, for example, was really any slower this time than in Bahrain, it was just impossible to tell because he was always in traffic. Being at the front allowed him to judge his race last time, even against someone with more sets of tyres, and he could push in clean air when given the chance.

Much as I don't think it helps Ferrari, I think being on the front few rows is going to become increasingly important because a consequence of the close running and strategy options the tyres give you is that unless you get away from the pack at the start significantly, you have a lot of problems with traffic after stops.

It is, in my opinion, an unrepresentative picture that Hamilton's qualifying has not yet yielded success, since a combination of penalties, weather and poor starts have made him unable to use it as he normally might. But unless Alonso can get close to the front-running pace in quali consistently, we may seem him unable to maxmise his relative good race pace.

Apologies for the length of the post, just a lot of thoughts to dump ;)

That was incredible, I don't know how it was 3.5s, I thought it was quicker when I watched it live. I think it's interesting that the rear right is done the opposite way to normal. It solved the problem that Lewis had when he ran over the old tyre anyway.

The time speed is not correct in that gif, it's been speeded up

I know I mean when I watched it live.

RE "we" comments. Meh I think it's fine, it really shouldn't bother people.

In the pit stop, what is the job of the 'centre' man at bottom of that pic? Centre man top cleans out the air box, centre man bottom just leans in and then clears off - saying hi to Alonso?

I read on Scarbs that the adjusters for McLaren's brake duct outlet are controlled from a similar location, is all.

Can't stop watching, thanks for posting.
I wonder who makes the "go" signal for each tyre, that's insanely fast

I'm pretty sure it's all automated. The wheel guns are connected to the light system, and when each is withdrawn the system goes green.

This all sounds problematic if there is some kind of abnormal issue with the wheel nut or gun.

Yes Ferrari were the first to bring a light system to the grid. Other teams followed suit.

Yes and no. Ferrari introduced the light system in 2008, but it took quite some time to get the bugs sorted out. (The Singapore pit stop debacle that year cost Massa the Championship.)

And as 'spensive hinted, the light system is really just a way to fully exploit the quick-change wheel nuts we stole from Mercedes. The two combined have allowed for Ferrari's stops to regularly fall within the low 3-second range.

It's not the easiest thing in the world to pull off, as McLaren are discovering this season.

So rumors in the papers today say that Bigois has fallen out of favour at Mercedes after the arrivals of Costa and Willis, and he is now apparently on his way to Ferrari.

They've also noted how Tombazis spent the weekend taking notes on the Sauber, Williams and Red Bull. Also, he is apparently in contact with his former universities (Imperial and Cambridge) in order to establish some sort of program for Ferrari to recruit aerodynamacists.

Bigois is a very unknown quantity. He had a hand in the BGP001 along with Jorg Zander, and of course the Double diffuser which was dreamt up by a Japanese engineer.
But everything since then has been very mediocre at best W03 apart.

W01 was intrinsically flawed, as was the W02. Specifically in relation to the W02, Mercedes could not make the EBD work. This falls on an aerodynamiscist, of which Bigois is. Note also the W03's major short-coming is downforce or a lack thereof.

If he is being ushered out of Mercedes and Ferrari are picking him up, I would guess Mercedes have given up on Bigois' ideas.
Not sure why Ferrari would want this move.
More could have been done.
