The 65th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 24, 1981. A hectic month of May was interrupted several times by rain. Bobby Unser took the checkered flag as the winner, with Mario Andretti second. The following morning, USAC officials ruled that Unser had passed cars illegally while exiting the pit area on lap 149, and issued him a one-position penalty. The official posted results scored Unser finishing second, and declared Andretti the winner.
After a lengthly protest and appeals process, the penalty was rescinded, and Unser was reinstated the victory on October 9. The race is widely considered one of the most controversial races in Indy history

Thank you very much for the 1981 Indy Race. Pit fire, really big shunt, incredible rookie Josele Garza, the Whittington Brothers...

The Interscope Cosworth car was beautiful. I would have been something to see it with the flat-6 Porsche at Indy !

For half a moment, I doubted that Porsche fielded an effort with it's own flat 6, I was wrong! Wow, the Indy engine was based on an old 935 layout, producing upwards of 800bhp. Thanks for making me check the facts, I should have known better.

Loved the old days of CART/Indycar.

Thanks again Strad. 1979 : we see Rick Mears with the Penske PC6 and Bobby Unser with the Penske PC7 beside Al Unser and his Chaparral 2K (full ground effects car). Was the Penske PC7 (skirts + sidepod) also a ground effect car in 1979 ? Do you think it's correct to compare the Chaparral 2K with the Lotus 79 and the Penske PC7 with the Lotus 78 or Tony Southgate Shadow DN9, Arrows FA1 and Arrows A1 ?

It was one of the 62-year-old Indianapolis Motor Speedway's worst days, though there were no deaths. And the carnage started before the crowd, estimated in excess of 300,000 hardly had been seated.
The pace car, a Dodge Challenger convertible driven by Eldon Palmer of Indianapolis, overshot pit road after getting the 33 starters underway and ploughed into a wooden trailer positioned for photographers near the first turn,
Twenty-five persons were injured, nine serious enough to be hospitalized in downtown Indianapolis with head injuries and broken limbs. Several others were treated at the track hospital.
Bobby Unser the 1968 winner, crashed into the spinning car of Mike Mosley of Brownsburg, Ind., who had lost control and skidded into the retaining wall.
Mosley was hospitalized with compound fractures of the arm and leg and had burns about the face. It was the most serious injury to a driver during a day that saw three major speedway wrecks and 40 minutes of running under live yellow light slowdowns. Unser escaped injury.
In one of the acts of heroism for which the Indianapolis race is famous, Gary Bettenhausen, son of a great driver now dead, drove his car off the track and rushed to Mosley's aid. He helped remove the 26-year-old Mosley from the wreckage.
