Riccardo Paletti : 30 years ago

Post

We often tend to remember anniversaries of drivers who passed away like Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna or Jim Clark. Those were all legends. Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the passing of Riccardo Paletti. He died just two days short of his 24 year birthday. The events occured at the start of the Canadian GP, June 13, 1982. The Ferrari of Didier Pironi who was on Pole Position stalled as the lights turned green. Paletti driving a modest Osella who was storming from the back of the grid slammed the rear of the Ferrari. The car moments later ignited in flames with marshalls and Didier Pironi helping. I was in attendance of the race. I was sitting at the hairpin and we could see big black smoke rising in the air. For those of you interested you can see the video on Youtube with commentary by Sir Jackie Stewart. Enter Paletti 1982.
