Perhaps testing such a radical opening of the rulebook is better done in a lower-profile series to test the waters. If it works well I would hope to God that F1 is paying attention.

Open F1 regulations circa 2020?

I think you are right about the implementation of such huge rule changes. Testing it in a lower formula (or even a semi-spec series) first would be the way to go. Le Mans style engine rules would be an excellent addition.

This nirvana already exists... Speed Hillclimbing in the UK basically has no rules for the top category cars; no engine limits, no weight limits, no restrictions on active aero... only really overall vehicle size limits. The interesting thing is that the fastest cars basically look like 1990's F1 cars with huge wings...

Or if circuit racing is more your thing then have you looked at formula 750? The chassis/bodywork regulations are very open, resulting in widely different looks to the cars, although all competitors must use one of two allowable engines and the cars must be 2 seaters (sort of!).

Open engine rules rpm and displacement limit (for road relevance) and limit fuel flow rate to limit the power
4 tyres are to be exactly the same lasts a whole race + qualy(for road relevance)
no refuelling and drs
4 wheel drive and 4 wheel steering are allowed
higher ride hight and narrower wings for better dives around the track

mayb have 2 tyre manufacturers and teams have to run 1 of their cars on each manufacturers for the races meaning tyre company A for car 1 and tyre company B for car 2
good old tyre battles

I'm skeptical of this. Somehow I don't think F1 tires can be said to have much road relevance whether they last 80 km or 350 km.

I don't understand why the teams can't mix and match the allotted tires any way they like. In Barcelona they could use the harder compound on the left and the softer on the right. What is the reasoning behind disallowing this?

I do believe the regulations should be opened up a bit more, as at the moment there isn't much room for massively radical ideas, we want to see massively different cars! so I would say, open them up a bit, :D

I'd love to see all external surfaces restricted one continuous surface with min 100mm radius and only a few approved openings for intake, exhaust and rear vision mirrors. This would cut out all wings, vanes, strake etc. Any loss in cornering performance from this could be recouped by going back to fat tyres.

While I hate the "road relevance" trip, I do lament the importance of aerodynamics in F1.

Tyres lasting the full race has been done before (quite recently) and was a disaster. Tyres are too easily damaged either from flat spotting or punctures. Changing tyres has always been a part of racing

I thought it produced some interesting races... and I think its almost criminal the number of tyres that get used at each GP.... But I agree the flat spot/puncture issue is a potential problem... but there is a way around that; allow tyres to be changed, but only allow one mechanic into the pitlane to change those tyres.. so changing one would be no problem (3 or 4 seconds), but to change all four would take too long for it to be a valid strategy....

well even if you have pit stops it doesnt stop you from having punctures or flat spots does it?
If the tyres can pump in 60laps without performance drop then it will be better to not change tyres, and that is why we should have tyre battles

fatter tires will never be able to compensate fully for lost downforce.
It might increase the mechanical grip but that´s about it.
It would slow down the cars due to extra wide tires and it would hurt the fuel economy quite bad i think.

Of course you can claw back some grip with fatter tires but it will never be anywhere near a car with downforce that´s pushing the rubber down into the road.

I would want change the rules so that you could do things with middle section of the front wing, the current front wings look terrible.
