They were enemies inside the cockpit, a rather different picture outside of it though.

Yes very much so. Their rivalry was also set in the backdrop of a huge war between Ferrari and McLaren.
I wonder how these 2 would have fared as team mates....
Aye.

Their rivalry stems back even before F1 8) . Who would've thought they'd end up in the same team today... .

Nuvolari vs Varzi
In 1947 he drove his last great race in a 1000cc Cistalia. The Mille Miglia. Against far more powerful cars he led the race until his engine cut because of rain. Clemente Biondetti swept by to win.

'I did not win,' admitted Boindetti later, 'I merely finished first. The just and deserving winner is Nuvolari, the greatest racing driver in the world.'

'Tazio was a phenomenon,' says Dreyfus. 'It may be a cliche but I think he was born to drive. He was so instinctive, his reflexes were uncannuy and he seemed to do everything right. We all tried to emulate him a little, but it didn't work.

'Only Tazio could be Tazio.'

My avatar is Nuvolari ;) I wish the great Italian marques weren't all FIAT group, so we could still see Alfas and Maseratis racing in F1.

I always thought Nuvolari vs. Rudolf Caracciola seemed like a great rivalry - the real greats of the era. Obviously it's difficult to get a real feel for things so long before your time though.

I also agree that the Schu/Hakk and Schu/Alonso rivalries were two of the greats. What, I think, prevents the current crop from having a great rivalry, is that you can't see them all pushing the cars faster than the other, lap-by-lap. I can think of various races where Michael and Mika were way ahead of the pack, one setting a fastest lap, then the other pips it by a tenth, only for the first to then go even faster. They can't really do that much these days, as they've always got to have a mind towards conserving tyres.

One thing I have to say is the current Hamilton/Massa ,Maldonado/everyone :) rivalries are quite cool because as soon as they meet on track you instantly think 'here we go again'

rival doesnt mean they hate each other

A rival is a person, team, company, or other organization competing against another person or team, etc.

Villeneuve vs Schumacher in 97 was also entertaining, though going into that season i wanted to see HHF vs Schumacher but it never really happened.

Schumacher - Hakkinen. It was AWESOME. For me it's simple, 98 - 2000 era was fantastic. A shame Schumacher had his crash at Silverstone 99.

For me the 1998 war between Schumacher in his Ferrari and Hakkinen in his Mclaren was epic. It was two teams going at it with everything at their disposal. It was two drivers using every resource at their disposal, not just for a few races, it lasted from the first race of the season to the last..

It swung to and fro, one driver winning one, two, or three races, the next race the other regained lost ground. I never missed a race then, I just had to tune in and watch the strategies and action play out, watching a truly exciting war being waged in front of me.

In 1998 those two drivers won every race on the calender bar Spa where they both retired, and San Marino where Hakkinen retired with a gearbox problem, Coulthard had the drive of his life, and the Ferraris sported the ugliest appendages imaginable.

raymondu999 wrote:Hey all. Just wondering. What were the greatest rivalry eras for you? I don't mean something quite like Hamilton-Alonso's 2007 rivalry. I meant like the 1998-1999 Hakkinen Schumacher battles... Senna-Prost... Alonso-Schumacher in 2005-2006... For me personally the greatest one recently was 2005-2006. I was hoping to see another "golden rivalry" by Schumi vs Alonso vs Hamilton vs Vettel, but it isn't happening so far. lol.

What's your favorite?

I don't understand why people call 2005 a Schumi vs Alonso rivalry.

Everyone who followed that season knew the Ferrari/bridgestone was nowhere and Schumi was in the firing line for getting tangled up in the mid-pack.

It's only at the conclusion of '06 where Alonso completed his back-to-back that people, predominately Alonso fans spawned some bullshit about beating Schumacher 2 seasons in a row. WTF!

To answer the question. Hakkinen - Schumacher '98-'01.

I'd have to say Prost vs. Senna. That was when I started watching F1 and those are the most memorable. You could feel the tension between the two.

Nowadays I have a rivalry with anybody that beats Webber. Personal rivalry at best.
