Should we take odds if Hamilton manages to negotiate to keep his trophies?

Hamilton would want to be careful he doesn't bluff his way out of a seat. Sounds like RD is looking to stamp his authority and nothing does that quite like a DCM.

I would imagine any of the hundreds of willing and ready replacements couldn't care where the trophies go.

Ok they are right at the sharp end, but without hundreds of people who get significantly less income, rewards and recognition working at the team they would never have the opportunity to win a trophy. The team, in my opinnion, is bigger and more important than the driver. What a motivator it must be to walk into work at the MTC or any other successfull team to be greeted with a dazzling array of the teams achievements.
And as I said before... That's why they're awarded a constructor's trophy.

Some teams like Ferrari and McLaren obsessively retain everything. They see it as preserving their heritage and reinforcing a culture of putting the team before the individual.

Any driver signing for then should know that's how they work, it's part of their pedigree. If a diver doesn't like working for a team with a rich heritage, then they can work for a minor team who don't do that. Simple choice.

I'm not disagreeing – you'll see from my original post, I'll be very surprised if Lewis manages to get this... I'm just also adding that I don't get the mentality of the teams here, simply because a trophy for the team is given out at the race.

The trophies belong to those who pay the bills. Ain't that right, strad?

hahahaha now that is funny :)

Mclaren needs Hamilton more then he needs them that´s for sure.

Where else can he go though? Red Bull are full, and Seb probably wouldn't want a legitimate threat once Mark retires. Ferrari has Alonso, and Lewis wouldn't take contracted #2 seat. Mercedes are the only option really. And they're slowly returning to their normal, pre-Brawn days of mediocre performance. McLaren are the only legitimate choice for Lewis. And both Ron and Lewis know this.

Back to the trophies though: Lewis knew the deal long before he added "McLaren" to his CV. If Senna's, Prost's, Lauda's and Mika's are all in the trophy room at the MTC, what on earth is Lewis smoking that makes him think he'll get to keep his. If he's as successful as he believes he can be, his name will be up in lights forever. McLaren's won't necessarily.

I'd love to see him try this if he ever wants to drive for Ferrari!!

Domenicali has said it would be "foolish" to deny a seat to a driver of the same caliber as Hamilton, this was in 2011 in the middle of the Hamilton´s worst year ever.
Alonso has said he has no problems (probably because he´s on his backyard now)

I think Horner also likes to talk about that it would not be good etc but just imagine the PR value of having Vettel and Hamilton in the same team. Two of the best drivers in modern day.

With that said, Hamilton will stay at Mclaren.
Loyalty i think is what keeps him there rather then not being able to get a seat elsewhere.

I don´t think Vettel has any say in his teammate, but we know Alonso do.

I think what Hamilton wants is to get the trophies "on loan." Or even the originals and mclaren get copies. I mean what does a driver has after he retires?

Aren't there other teams where the driver's keep the trophies?

You mean other than the millions of dollars, the fitness and youth to do pretty much whatever they want, houses all over the world, more cars and pu$$y you can shake a stick at, and their name in the history books forever..?

Yeah, you're right. That's not a lot to retire on, is it?

No. It's pretty much standard practice in all of racing that the teams, those who pay the bills, keep the hardware.

I'm fond of Vettel's practice. He saves the helmets from his race wins.

To add another dimension in to this debate. Does anybody think it's a bit harsh that the winners of Wimbledon don't get to keep the trophy? The women's dish trophy is like 2foot across or something and would make a wicked fruit platter - they get an 8inch replica of it to take home in their hand luggage.
Do you think they get annoyed that they don't get the real thing (or even a life size copy)? Or do they accept that having their name inscribed on the trophy is enough of a trophy in it's own right?

Not quite comparable. There's a difference between a trophy like the Wimbledon Trophy which is one trophy that is "held" temporarily and passed from winner to winner, and a trophy which is won, and a new trophy is given at each event.

Well the truth is I didn't get the trophy, instead I got the clap from the trophy girl. ;) True.
