What are you implying here?
That doesn't give damning evidence against Nelson's potential as a top driver. That was a situation where even the most hardened of rookies will have a tough time.

He probably had potential and there were signs of improvement from him, but you don't criticize someone with an obvious authority having only "potential" under your belt.
That is apart from the fact that what he said goes completely opposite to what was known about Senna.

Still, there's a possibility that journo have misquoted him.

I am implying humor here.

Sometimes, I wonder if joking around here is against the terms of this forum.

Yes!

And you know to be a little more on topic, people forget that Nelsinho's old man had nothing good to say about Senna either.

If I recall correctly, he made comments back in the eighties that Senna was gay.

So this is all par for the course when it comes to Nelson Piquet and Nelson Piquet Jr.

I'm always amazed at how little mention Nelson Piquet gets for his driving ability.

He might be the only 3-time World Champion who people forget exists.

Piquet had a very fast mouth on him. I think he tried to play the psychological game with other drivers but just came across as a gobby idiot half of the time. I seem to remember him making some comment about Mansell's wife being ugly at about the time that Mansell was giving serious trouble on track. Probably trying to wind Mansell up (not difficult to do!) but it came across as him just being an unpleasant little man.

In a sport filled with egos, Piquet always came across as the king ego of his time. Shame, because his driving was often sublime.

I´d think the south americans are at a language diasadvantage ,neither Senna nor Piquet were good at speaking and maybe even understand english .So it is quite possible when you try to be funny or make the mikey of someone it does fire backwards.
Piquet came from a Ecclestone background so I´d assume it was rather easy for a young man to misunderstand a lot of things happening around you... :wtf:
With Senna the guy denyig Piquet the kind of publicity he was looking for in his (brasil) world it is not surprising that Jr.adopted to his sr ´s stance. He never heard anything else in his life and his own father is his undebatible hero (and why not).
Jr.has been dragged into the biggest --- possibly under the guidance of his father methinks and whatever his potential was this has cost him massively when it comes to his international racing career.

I think Nelson and Ayrton both had a good command of English, considering it was not there native language, Senna had no trouble handling Jackie Stewarts idiot questions on his accidents. Nascar and Piquet Jnr deserve each other.

Senna himself felt he was unable to express himself properly in english and claimed a lot of trouble he had were caused by his unappropriate choice of words.
Quite remarkable for a super ego .
I work in an engineering environment where inevitably you have to deal with all sorts of foreign people and it amazes me to this day how rudimentary most peoples english is not just when it comes to technical terms or explanations .
Add to that a conversation in a foreign language for both participants and you have the perfect starting point for rather comical results just by misunderstandings and lack of language expertise.

Very interesting, three pages of comments about a wrong quote.
Piquet Jr said: "Senna PROBABLY would not have won a championship if raced 10 years EARLIER". Then he explained that he believes Senna was too aggressive against car mechanics to drive during the 80's so successfully.
By the way, it is hard to guess what Senna would do nowadays. Check Schummi's performance...
