Lewis needs a good car to be WDC again. While I think he is a great driver I'm not sure he could turn a team around like Alonso is doing at Ferrari. I really think a good car/team is 80% of a winning formula in F1.

He's got that this year, has he not? He needs a mindset refresh.

Well lets be frank, the team didn't really help him out at the start of this year. And it is a common thing with macca, they seem to tread on there own toes.

I think Hamilton leaving is a good move for Macca, Button (the idea of having a car build around him must put a smile on his face) and Hamilton (just because his always been there don't always mean its the best for both). Merc the best choice, i dunno.

If it is true, there could be more to last weekend than meets the eye? All the eggs now in Buttons basket and Hamilton knows it?

edit: keeping an eye on Hamiltons twitter. If its false, i'd expect him to say

I heard he was going to rap for them too; might be why Lupe Fiasco was visible at his side of the McLaren garage, last weekend ;).

this made my day

He does have a good car this year. The team as a whole is one of the best out there. A couple botched pitstops, poor set up choices, and racing incidents are the reasons why he isn't leading in the points. This is just the nature of racing at this level. Very little room for error. But, you win as a team and lose as a team. Lewis definitely needs a little "mental adjustment," but going to a different team would only be a temporary distraction. If Lewis wants more $$$ then fine go to Mercedes, but if he wants more victories and a WDC run then Mclaren IS the team to stick with.

What I don't quite understand on the financial side is that Mercedes is supposed to run a tight (ish) budget, more than McLaren at least, or are their driver fees not part of that?

I'm not sure how Mercedes' financials break down, but I would have to think they would pay Lewis at least as much as he is making at Mclaren if not more to make it worth his while.

Brand value: Mercedes is a much bigger brand than McLaren. His management team can exploit this.

It may not continue the all-GB line-up, but they have raced a long time against each other (so there's a bit of respect there) as well as the contrasting styles of racing (Button's smooth, Webber's gritty, but both overtake smartly) would do well for Mclaren. Also, both Button and Webber get along well with their mechanics and race teams; a very congenial pairing, really.

If Hamilton's supposedly going to Mercedes, and the all-German line-up is gone, I suppose this may be due to Mercedes thinking of scaling back their support further and using Hamilton to bring in sponsorship.
Aggree about Webber, byt a Di Resta in the second car would just about be what McLaren could want.

As it is, i think you havebeen reading some of the same articles ive been reading, Mercedes are looking to scale back the €70m they pump into the team back, as another re-brand is on the cards for the team, at the present moment its Mercedes AMG, and next year it could be AMG Mercedes, and with Hamilton no doubt sponsorship would follow.

It could all be down to Bernie, wanting a top driver at each of the top 5 teams with a strong second driver as well, he may also be wanting a strong mid feild as well, in order to make "the show" (god i hate that term) better for all, or to make it better for advertisers. Bernie is also trying to weaken key teams and strengthen others, there are people somewhere getting played as pawns in Bernies grand plan. God knows what that plan is!

DiResta would be a good second driver to Button.

I have. Team Mercedes may start looking for other avenues of revenue if the rumors are true, and Hamilton may be that other avenue...if rumors are true, of course.

As for Bernie's plans: How can you say that about him weakening teams? Even after two double WCs, Red Bull still have their EBD. Oh wait.... :x

In my view Di Resta is a similar category of driver to Button. Both of them have never been known for amazing feats of speed, but rather clever race and stint management, and a calm, smooth driving style.

From Autosport, btw:
Charles Pic is in contention for a race seat at Sauber in 2013.
AUTOSPORT understands that the Frenchman’s management has held talks with the Swiss team, which is known to be evaluating its 2013 driver options. While Sergio Perez is almost certain to stay on if the team’s Telmex backing continues, Kamui Kobayashi’s place is not guaranteed. The team could opt to take a driver who can bring a budget, provided they can find a driver of suitable ability.

“We are not in a hurry,” said Sauber CEO Monisha Kaltenborn of its 2013 driver line-up. “We will do it in due course. But it will be before December.” Pic’s Marussia contract runs only to the end of this season and he has impressed during his rookie year. His management is known to have spoken to other teams, including Force India, but Sauber could prove to be the most competitive option.

I want Hamilton to go to Mercedes just to see Raikkonen in McLaren :) Also, I find Hamilton a little bit spoiled. Let's see what he will do in a slower car.

Kimi making a come back to McLaren...that would be interesting. But in the other hand i cant stop thinking that Boullier will do everything to keep Kimi in Lotus.

If i was the team manager: my fav driver to make things interesting around Jenson would be Kamui Kobayashi.

The exploitation of hams management working with Merc directly through the LH relationship is spot on. They would have huge influence on LH's mind, and after seeing the set that appears to be at, they would play him like a fiddle. That's an insightful thought I hadn't even considered. Wow. So there's that.

"IF he does move, Hamilton to be the modern-day Villeneuve?"
That line is eerily easy to see happening.

To be fair, I'm quite sure Lewis is more talented than Jacques (except maybe for matters of music...

But then again if that video's anything to go by I'm not sure it's too far behind.

Or are you talking about Gilles?
