Road tyres Vs Racing Tyres

Post

If road tyres can be made to last years why are racing tyres design to last such a
short length of time ?

If you had to make a wild guess what would it be?

They are actually much harder then rubber on road cars as road car rubber would be finished after 2 corners but yes, temps and much much more stress.

I wouldn't say road car tires wouldn't be finished in 2 corners, but Nando is on point that if you were to take a road car to the racetrack and start taking hot laps you'd obliterate the tires within several hours of running. Ask me how I know :)

Consumer tires last so long because people drive slowly in nearly straight lines with them.
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.

since f1 cars only weights less than 700kgs while road cars weighting double of that are considered light weight, cornering at 5G in an F1 car is like a Veyron pulling 1.66G. Road tyres work no where near as hard, therefore racing tyres are just as if not more durable than road car tyres.

While all the above is right, there's a much more simple answer... because they don't need to.

Why would you design a racing tyre to do 1000 laps? The harder rubber would unavoidably offer less grip.
