F1 = 300km?

Post

So lately i´ve been wondering about this sort of thing.

An F1 race is supposed to be 300km as far as i know.

If we take Suzuka, the upcoming GP, it will be 53 laps.

One lap of Suzuka is 5.807km

300 divided by 5.807 is 51,6 laps, arguably 52 laps rounded up. The GP is 53 laps long.
5.807 times 53 laps is 307,771km
So really you could remove one lap and still be above the 300km limit.

i.e. 53 laps = 307,771km
52 laps = 301,964km

Anyone know why this is?
Is it superstition or politics or some other weird "logical" explanation?

Yep - 305km, rounded up. (ie 305.1km is ok, 304.9km is not ok - you'll always round up)

Why is Monaco less than 305km?

Because more than 305km would mean doing 92 laps, and that would always time out

But wasn't the 2 hour rule only introduced after the 2011 Canadian GP ? Monaco was still less than 305 km before than.

And if what you say is true, why isn't Singapore shortenend too?

This 2 hour rule is in effect for probably as long as the 305km races is.

The rule is that the race ends at the end of the lap in which the lead car travels 305km, or has been racing for 2 hours, except monaco where they must travel 260km.

That's 4 hour rule. Different.

The Singapore race, if run in no safety car, is able to run before the 2 hour limit.

Interesting. Had no idea this was the case. Puts some perspective on things, with a Cup level NASCAR race being up to ~965km, and the 24hr of Le Mans coming in at ~5000+ km!

Yeah Its a relatively short race in comparison. But I think 2hrs is long enought o watch cars go round in circles...

The original distance was 190miles or 305.7Km but its been rounded down since the FIA adopted Metric....

F1 is a sprint, not a marathon.
