Audi's first supercar: The R8

Post

Audi has just unveiled the 2008 R8 — its first ever production supercar. Sales will begin in the first half of 2007 for the United States and Europe. The car has a 420 horsepower high-revving V8 engine and all-wheel-drive. It uses the mid-engine Lamborghini Gallardo platform, and will sell for around $100,000 — positioning it squarely against the BMW M6 and Aston Martin Vantage. It features LED headlamps surrounded by LED running lights and indicators. LEDs are also used in the engine bay to make the impressive V8 visible even at night. Claimed 0 to 62 mph time is 4.6 seconds, though this number is likely conservative.

I still feel that using the name R8 for a bloated production car is a slap in the face of one of the greatest sport prototype racer....

RM, yes it is a funny name given the LM R8's heritage, but it is still a stunning road car! I'm sure it will do well.

Just a Lamborghini Gallardo redone....I rather get a Jaguar XKR for that amount of money
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

Well the XKR is a "redone" Aston Martin DB9, but I still think it would be money well spent

I thought the XKR uses Jaguars Aluminum chassis from the XJ and the Aston DB9 uses the VH platform that will replace all the Aston Martin cars. The new XK has some cues that look Aston Martin-ish... I glady take the XKR over the BMW M6, SL55, XLR-V series and Porsche 911 Carrera.

The R8 has the worst rims I've seen on any "supercar" let alone a road car ever! You'd think the blocks in Germany would atleast get that right.
The car looks like a melted coupe that's being pulled at the ends.
It doesn't have great supercar proportions, it's sad really I've owned and love Audi's over the years. If they wanted to build something great, let them build the KTM/Audi roadsater, there's a car with proper proportions and "nice" rims.

Cheers,

A bit too slow for me

I'm sick of idiots telling me 'If i bought a supercar it would be a Bugatti because its so fast, Jeremy Clarkson told me too.'

At least Audi still retain their racing heritage.
