Mexican GP in 2014?

There were a number of important meetings during the United States GP weekend in Austin about the possibility of a Grand Prix in Mexico. From what I hear, a five-year deal was agreed between the Formula One group and Carlos Slim Jr – the son of the world’s richest man – who will guarantee the deal. Some of Slim’s company will help pay for the race but a big chunk of money will also come from the Mexican government, which explains the presence of Mexico’s outgoing President Felipe Calderón in Austin. He has another 10 days left on his mandate and wants to sort something out before he leaves office. His successor Enrique Pena Nieto has also agreed to support an event, which is logical given that there are going to be two F1 drivers from Mexico next season.

The initial suggestion was that the race could take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City in June, to replace the postponed New Jersey race, but the various consortia bidding for the work all apparently agree that it is impossible to do all that is needed in the six months available, even if there is endless money. The problem is that the track not only needs to be resurfaced but also much of the track needs its drainage and foundations redone. The pit and paddock area will also need to be done from scratch. This cannot be achieved in time for 2013.

There is an argument that rather than botching in order to get a race for 2014, it might be wiser to invest and create a purpose-built facility in the Cancun area, but this is unlikely to be done before 2016, which is too late.

The old track will be a compromise solution because things have changed a lot since F1 left in 1992. The great Peraltada corner is unlikely to be revived because after F1 left a big new stadium was built inside the corner. This means that the track cannot be reprofiled to create runoff areas, and there is not an option on the outside of the corner because there is a main road which gets in the way.
Considering the prestige and financial heavy weight of the players this looks like an increasingly likely development. With five potential race meetings on the American continents there is also an increased likelyhood that F1 will round up the traveling schedule by adding Long Beach back. It could be run back to back with Texas. Mexico and Brazil would be twinned and in summer New Jersey with Montreal. Both Mexico and Long Beach would be massively supported by their geographical location in places that can run a GP off the crowded summer calendar. So Texas, California, Mexico and Brazil could all be tucked to the back end of the racing year where they would be given additional slots. It looks increasingly like we are in for 22 races and more as we are coming nearer to the middle of the decade. I'm thinking that the teams will eventually see the advantage of running a longer calendar with less off season time. I don't like the three or four months hiatus that we currently have. And to run a testing season of six weeks in February and March is total nonsense if you can run paying races as an alternative. For the fans it would make more sense to have eight weeks off and watch races from February to November. I would love it.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

Interesting stuff.

I'm under the impression that most teams think 20 races is the limit though. Where will they fit in the others? Personally, as a fan, I'd like to see them cut down that long summer break, which seems interminable, but I'm sure the teams have their reasons for wanting to maintain it. They certainly don't seem to want a longer season.

I'm more inclined to believe we'll see the end of some European races, with Hungary probably the first to go. Will there then be some kind of sharing agreement between Germany and Belgium? (given the Nurburgring's problems). Come to think of it, Spain's now down to one, so dropping that and Hungary already frees up two spots.

the Mexican GP is unusual due to the altitude of Mexico City (about 2240 m, 7350 ft)

the 2014 engines would be somewhat problematical in set up for the atmospheric pressure, only about 75% of the usual
(no unrestricted pressure turbos have ever been run in Mexican GPs)

also of course the DF would also need a different configuration
