Hill warns Alonso not to relax

Former champion Damon Hill has warned Renault's Fernando Alonso to watch out for Michael Schumacher, even if the German has publicly ruled out his chances of winning the Formula One title.

"Michael said he's not thinking about the championship now, that's baloney. He never gives up," the Briton, champion with Williams in 1996, told the BBC on Monday.

"I would keep my armour on if I were Alonso until after the last race."

Schumacher is 10 points behind champion Alonso with one race, in Brazil next week, to come after he retired from Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix with a blown engine.

The only way the German can take a record eighth title is if he wins at Interlagos - his last race before retirement - and Spaniard Alonso, winner at Suzuka, fails to score.

"Don't ever write that guy off. It's not over until it's over," said Hill, who had some epic battles with Schumacher in the 1990s, losing to him by one point after a collision in the final race of 1994.

"He's going to go into that last race thinking: 'Now, how can I win this and Alonso not score anything?' That's the way he's going to approach it. Otherwise he's not Michael Schumacher."

Why all this old racers think we actually care what they say?
Not one single week has passed without a comment of one of these retirees… I don’t really care what they say; Damon wasn’t able to do much, anyway…
The only one who should be allowed to talk and express their opinions are the racers and the team members, not old f4rts!

At first, I was absolutely staggered when Michael Schumacher said ‘it’s over’ after the race. It seemed incredible – the man famous for never giving up, effectively throwing in the towel.

But the more you think about it, the more you realise that this is just the Schumacher mind-management instinct kicking in.

Effectively, Michael has created a win-win situation for himself.

If he says that what lies before him is an impossible task, and then wins, he has achieved the impossible and will come out a hero just as he retires.

If Alonso wins he has already lowered expectations and no one will think the less of him.

Ross Brawn remained pleasingly off-message, insisting that it’s not all over; that Alonso could well fail to finish in Brazil, and it’s almost a given that Michael will have the pace to win the grand prix.

Time will tell, as Jean Todt might say.

Michael’s being philosophical, and mind-management theories aside, this is the most crushing disappointment of Michael’s whole career, and it must have been tempting to go into self-pitying mode.

Saying what he has said softens the blow, making it easier not only for him, but also for his beloved Ferrari team, who were distraught after the race.

They know that their equipment let Michael down when he needed it the most.

I agree 100% with Ted Kravitz (bold letters are mine).
I was so happy that people could have said that the Macca got another Championship.

Damon did win a WDC, and fought Michael tooth and nail twice. Once, Shu took him out at Australia, and once Damon prevailed. So Mr Hill has the experience of battling Michael Schumacher for the title, and in close fights. I think that should be recognized. Who better to offer an opinion of a person than one who truly knows his abilities, close up and personal?

What I find rather annoying is the fact that retired racers keep pointing out things that are really, really obvious.
Alonso doesn't need Mr Hill's advice, he is not an idiot. I don't need to read his comments, either.

Caesar didn't heed his soothsayer either, and then the calendar rolled along to March 15th. We have 20/20 vision only in hindsight.

Ok, then I hope he listens to Damon and wins the championship, because I don't want under any circumstances that MS wins the championship. He's done enough damage to F1.
