Who will Win Autosport Driver Of The Year 2012??

Post

The 1st of many driver awards you can expect to go to Fernando Alonso.

This will be the 2nd time in 3 years he will collect the award, despite having been in inferior machinery and not winning the title in any of those years.

Some consolation for him and his fans.

Reason: Converted title to neutral stance

I would honestly expect Hamilton to pip him to it.

Not possible, I think. Mainly because I think the award comes from the driver rating they give every GP.

Alonso (yet again) is their highest rating driver of the year infront of Vettel and Hamilton.

Therefore I think it's pretty much confirmed Alonso will be the driver of the year.

Hamilton was definitely unlucky this year, he was exemplary and paid the penalty for an unreliable macca.
However, I think Alonso shades it for his efforts this year. I look back and think....What else could Alonso have done that could have made him champion?

The only thing I can come up with was the racing incident in Suzuka with Raikkonen. No blame apportioned there either.

He did what he could do and was ultimately trumped by Newey...I mean Red Bull....sorry, Vettel! :D

I think the Autosport ratings say it all really....

Alonso on top 2/3 years, last year I felt he was the best too but Vettel had that rocketship for the entire season (not just 6 races) and so they had to give it to him as he was winning everything in sight.

The ASMUS ratings (which i dont care about) I think may have Alonso on top as well for what it's worth/

While I agree there isn't much he could do better - it's really hard to quantify really. Did Alonso always drive as fast as he could - or did he at times play the number game too much, prioritizing finishing steady over risking more, but perhaps losing more at the same time?

Also, equally - I think Raikoennen couldn't have done more this year. Neither could Hamilton - although there is the incident with Maldonado that one could argue cost him a podium instead of a DNF. When I read about all the praise Alonso gets, I just wonder - how much is down to to media influence - jumping on the popular vote? Naming Alonso driver of the race/season/year whatever - is always the popular vote it seems. I'm not disputing his race craft at all mind you - I just think to a certain degree, Alonso is also flattered somewhat by popular belief that his Ferrari was a dog whole year (while ignoring that the car perhaps wasn't that bad after all), Massa severely underperforming (perhaps because of the car, but perhaps because he felt unsupported in the shadows of Alonso)...

I think what the end to the season has shown - Massa found his mojo back somewhat and did outperform Alonso in the last two races (or more?) - was this down to Alonso trying too much to play the number game? Or did Massa just find back his form that was lacking most part of this and last year? For sure, if he is able to remain as focused next year will perhaps put Alonso in a very different light indeed. I still expect Alonso to outshine his teammate, though perhaps not to the degree we have become used to this year.

It's a tricky argument really. I honestly think Alonso is a great driver - but surely the idea that Massa has somewhat played 'slave' in order to help his championship hopes puts a dent to his image in my view. Vettel didn't have that luxory to that extend and clearly, neither did Hamilton. Given this - I do think Hamilton is the driver of the year. He's done pretty much what he needed all year while having a huge amount of misfortune. And yet, he carried on, as focused as ever while right to the end. He deserves it every much as Alonso - but without the dent of being center in what seems effectively a one-man team. Although - at the end of the day, Hamilton just doesn't seem to be that "popular" among the paddock and the rest of the field.

Also, if we just focus on how much one can do with a car - I think Vettel has been pretty flawless too. Webber might have been faster than him on some occasions, but then again, so has Button over Hamilton and even Massa over Alonso. What I find more interesting is how these drivers cope when things don't go their way - and IMO in these races, Vettel has impressed by keeping his head in the right place and that ultimately won him the championship.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

I believe there's also some award where team principals vote for their driver of the year. Alonso also won that in 2010.

Alonso has produced magic this year. Car haven´t been good in qualifying trim but quick in the race.

However, it´s what he does on lap one that has been absolutely insane.
His starts for the last 2 years have been completely unreal.

I think he´s WELL deserved of being called the best driver this year.

Will history remember that though, I think this is the most frustrating thing of all for me... I agree with you by the way. I just feel sad because I think that history won't recognise his achievements this year  .

I honestly think that even though Alonso has obviously been great this year, he has been overpraised by many. Of course, he is one of the best drivers out there and a double world champion. But we don't really know how good or bad the Ferrari has been overall. Massa made the car seem terrible for a long time this year. But at the end of this season, Alonso hasn't been any better than Massa. In the beginning of the season Alonso won races and reached the podium, while Massa didn't even get into the top 10. That seems very impressive, but I think the car was better than Massa made it look like.

In the last races of the season, the Ferrari-drivers have been quite equal. In Brazil, Massa qualified better than Alonso and slowed down to give him 2nd place. In USA, Massa qualified better than Alonso, but was moved back to give Alonso an advantage. Massa came back and finished the race just behind Alonso. In Korea, Massa was faster than Alonso, and was told to keep a safe distance towards the end of the race. Alonso was better than Massa in India and Abu Dhabi, so it has changed back and forth a little, but for a relatively long period, Massa has been at the same level. If Massa had been treated qual to Alonso (which of course I understand he couldn't expect, given the results in the past) I think he would have scored more points than Alonso in the final 3rd of the season.

For those who state that Vettel's titles are results of Newey machinery and not driver skills, I would like to point out that Mark Webber finished 6th in this year's championship with the same Newey machinery (and no Ferrari-like team orders). In fact, Webber has never finished runner-up behind Vettel in the championship, so it is obviously not only down to the car. Who has been the best driver this year is impossible to say, and Alonso is no doubt a strong candidate. But so is Vettel, and so are Hamilton and Raikkonen in my opinion.

Well true fans of the sport remember what Schumacher did in 97 or what Senna did in 93 so i think the hardcore fans will remember, though the casual fans won't.
