DHL fastest lap award

Post

http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/ ... 14130.html

Vettel got the award.
I thought it is interesting to look at the drivers who got fastest laps. Notable standouts are Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen, who have 2 fastest laps. Hamilton, Kamui Kobayashi, Grosjean, Perez, Hulkenberg, Webber, Schumacher, Senna had just 1 fastest lap.

It is interesting that no Ferrari drivers have fastest laps. Also interesting that Hamilton, Webber only have 1 fastest laps considering Mclaren and RB are the benchmark cars.

I often wonder why Lewis hardly ever gets a fastest laps? I feel that he is great in overtakings but not that fast.

It is because the shitty Pirelli tyres

The last driver to pit is the driver who gets the fastest lap

Hamilton has driven superbly this season because he learn to manage the tyres what, on the end, makes you go slower but longer

To be fair - managing tyres helps you to set a fastest lap, because you have healthier tyres at the end.

I think there are drivers who can consistently get fastest laps regardless of rules or tire manipulation. drivers like Kimi Raikkonen, Mika Hakkinen springs to my mind regarding such abilities.

A bit out of topic, but the most impressive lap I've ever seen by Hamilton is the top gear 'reasonable price car' laptime. He was only 0.7second off the fastest dry laptime. Of course, he is the fastest on wet track. Incredible talent showcase.

Yes, but at the same time, you will inevitably be limited. It's just vehicle dynamics. You have less grip, you go less quick around the laptime.

I'm not sure that that lap in particular was really a good example

According to Ben Collins in his book, the track was almost dry when Hamilton did his lap. It was really just kinda damp, it wasn't like montreal 2011. I guess you could argue that it still makes it harder to build heat in the tires but considering what kind of car that was...

I thought those are normal road tires which suppose to have a wide window of grip.
Pirelli's current tires are deliberately made to have narrow temperature window to make it a challenge.

So he did it on damp track?? so the footage is not from his fastest lap? Damn!! another bubble shattered.... lol

Jenson Button did a lap 0.2 seconds slower in very similar conditions and he was "show-boating" in the final corners and didn't cut the track, so it's not a great lap by Hamilton really. The whole thing isn't particularly scientific either.

Edited: he did two times at Top Gear (Button) my mistake.

Regarding fastest laps, well it´s kind of useless with these regulations. It´s more about when you pitted, how much of the tires you have left and who set their fastest lap last of everyone.

Now had we had re-fuelling you would have seen qualifying pace throughout the race and gotten a better idea on who was quickest in the races.

Today it´s "can i please do a fastest lap" they do it then back to taking care of tires.

this year has been about winning races as slow as you possibly can.

I guess the unpredictable tires created a variety of fastest drivers on race day, just like the 7 different winners on 1st seven race.
I hope there will be more stability next year. Ideally, a continuation of the rivaries left off Brazil 2012.

Vettel owns the record of the top gear fastest lap. Did he do it legitimately?

Yes it was legitimate. He even asked what tire pressures the car had.

Next years fastest lap award will be influenced by the new DRS rules. I reckon we will see Ferrari there or there about again. But I would not put money on it. THis year you had to be quick with full lap DRS and in race trim. Next year one variable will be removed. Who is likely to play this game better? Red Bull or Ferrari?

Because he's relatively hard on the tyres, and as such has no tyres left when he has no fuel left. He's extremely fast, hence why he keeps beating vettel to pole positions.

Pole positions: Lewis 7 - Vettel 6 despite Lewis having the fastest car for majority of the season...
