DHL fastest lap award

Vettel got the award. I thought it is interesting to look at the drivers who got fastest laps. Notable standouts are Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen, who have 2 fastest laps. Hamilton, Kamui Kobayashi, Grosjean, Perez, Hulkenberg, Webber, Schumacher, Senna had just 1 fastest lap. It is interesting that no Ferrari drivers have fastest laps.

Next years fastest lap award will be influenced by the new DRS rules. I reckon we will see Ferrari there or there about again. But I would not put money on it. THis year you had to be quick with full lap DRS and in race trim. Next year one variable will be removed. Who is likely to play this game better? Red Bull or Ferrari?

It's actually normally done by fastest race time not Qualification time, so DRS effect will be the same surely?

Indeed, if they based this on qualifying times Hamilton would have won it by a mile.

I guess what Hamilton had won is the number of pole positions. Clear indication of his amazing speed and McLaren's car speed in 2012. There should have been award for it. Oh well...

I don't think so. This year they could use DRS everywhere for qualifying. Next year they will only be allowed to use it in the DRS zone. This means quali pace and race pace towards the end of the race will be virtually the same thing. It will influence downforce levels and gearing particularly for Red Bull who will not be able to run the pole and scoot away tactic they have used the last two years.

According to Ben Collins in his book, the track was almost dry when Hamilton did his lap. It was really just kinda damp, it wasn't like montreal 2011. I guess you could argue that it still makes it harder to build heat in the tires but considering what kind of car that was...

Well the track at the hammer head is obviously wet - you can see the water on the track in the video.

Collins doesn't, of course, have any axe to grind as to why Hamilton, in the wet, was less than half a second slower than him, Collins, in the dry. Oh no.

Do people think that there are drivers who would be proportionally faster in a normal race car, vs an F1 car.

For instance, I think Button's driving style would be better suited to driving cars built for the road.

It's not a question of will there - it's more "there will." Inevitably different driving styles suit different cars, as do different lines and different methods of feel. Even on the same F1 car with two different setups, the pecking order amongst drivers could change. So why not in different cars

I think if you took all racing drivers around the world and let them drive all types of cars from each "section" of Motorsport,
WRC drivers would come out on top overall.

It´s a bit like Gymnasts.

Race of champions is a very good way to compare drivers from different disciplines on equal gear. I've watched the race many times. I like the way the organisers include fwd, rwd, high horsepower and low ones.

Button never really got good results in that competition. The germans are good but never won it. Some rally drivers (sebastian loeb and sebastian ogier) are really good. Kimi and lewis hamilton never entered that competition.

Yea it´s pretty interesting how Germans haven´t won a single Champion of Champions but they have won the Nations Cup 5 times in a row.
All of them with Schumi and Vettel.

I think Heikki has rallying roots too, doesn't he? Well the stadium-type circuit layout is sort of built for rally isn't it?

Interesting though that the pecking order changes very distinctively between different cars. The rally drivers tend to go well in the Skodas, as the DTM and endurance people tend to go well in the sportscars, rather unsurprisingly. Vettel is unreal in the ROC buggy - though not so spectacular in the KTM X-bow. (He's still good, but he's not "undeniably spectacular")

Yea i think basically all fins have some form of rallying in the woods as they grew up,
Same with Ekström, he grew up in the north sweden if im not mistaken and it´s basically the same there by running on lakes in the winter etc.

I think it´s simply as you say, WRC drivers comfort zone is much closer to what they run at RoC then F1 drivers.
Team championship relies on having two strong teammates (which Germany have) which probably helps them a great deal.
(apart form the obvious being stupid quick as the old man and the lucky boy are)

I think Schuey is better in buggy and is great in KTM. Last year Vettel impressed me in that stock-car silhouette.
