Very interesting analysis well worth reading. The upshot is that McLaren had 9 times the fastest car and Red Bull 7 times. But McLaren threw it all away on reliability and operational errors and ended up 3rd in the constructors. Some people will probably say its all the Sam Michael curse.
Ferrari have actually made progress and have been closer to the pace in 2012 than they were in 2011.

It also shows very clearly how badly Mercedes deteriorated during the season.
