I want a new game box. Xbox360 or PS3? Last one I bought was a Nintendo around 1991.

Don't buy a console. Buy games you like and then the console that runs them.

I know many have very strong opinions about which is better, one does this and the other does that and if you're ybernerd you can even run Linux and whatever...

If you're buying it for playing, shouldn't the games matter? Most are available for both, but then there are some that will never be converted to the other. Browse around, choose your favourite games you'll most likely like and then see what you need to play most of them. 8)

(or just get the previous ones, Xbox and PS2, you can get both with few games for the price of either new one and they are still perfectly fine for some entertainment ;) )

I'd suggest the XBox360, as I think Sony is headed for a fall. They've priced the PS3 into the stratosphere (US$500-600), and they're ruining my favorite game series (Gran Turismo) by making the gamer have to actually purchase, with real money, different cars and tracks. On top of that, Sony is forecasting that games will cost between US$60-100 each. It's utterly ridiculous.

But like pRo said, it really depends on what you want to play.

.......anyway back to the topic. If I was to buy one, it would be the Xbox-360, it's cheaper, the x-box online service is better than the PS3's, OK the graphics aren't as good as the PS3, but they're still excellent and the games are far better. Even some of the Sony exclusives are starting to move from Sony to Microsoft.

I suggest you choose your system based on preferences and which games you wish to run.
Personally, I stiull recommend the PC. There are tons of fantastic games out there, real life sims that are ultra competitive, unforgiving, and realistic. Games such as Rfactor http://rfactor.net/ and GTR 2 http://gtr-game.10tacle.com/index.php?id=246&L=1 just as examples. Mix in quality wheels such as the new Logitech G25 http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread/t-130246.html and add the video candy of three monitor display offered by Magtrox Thiplehead http://www.matrox.com/graphics/offhome/th2go/home.cfm, then you're talkoing about realistic, fantastic fun.
Personally, I go in the direction of my PC with the fun goodies. :D

The graphics are unmatched, the gameplay is realistic and as tough as it gets, and there are tons of leagues and races to be found 24/7.
Oh, and by the way, can you load additional tracks, or paint your car as you like? I can.

Ted68-- It may seem way off topic--but as you can see, lots of us enjoy gaming. I had a similar situation--What to buy. First research the game sites--there are 100's-- what kind to play?--racing, simulation, role playing games, shooters, strategy, puzzles?--reading reviews will help--see which games have the best ratings--I just bought a few consoles--current generation--new generation introductions--Nintendo Wii and PS3 in Nov.--
I hadn't played in years--so current gen-consoles are very advanced to me--Gamecube marked down from $299>$99--Slimline PS2 marked down from into price of $399>$129. Games bought used $11>$20 at gaming stores. Ebay $2& S/H. My mall store is currently selling games for$8--but they told me to hold off buying games for my Gen2 consoles till the new one are introduced--game prices will be less that $5. If you want a new gen console--search the net for opinions and spec/tech reviews. DaveKillens has a good point--a good PC video card--ie 128MB --starts at about $45--games can be had for $2.50-- I just got Driver by Reflections yesterday and IGN.com gives it a rating of 8.5/10--lots of great racing titles are availabel for $10+---buy a wheel/pedal set $45+ a UBS/PC controller-$25 an aviation stick-$10+ and you have a very cheap system.
There's also a lot of movie spinoff games for any syytem available--I would recommend a wheel/pedal set that works with several systems.
ENJOY.

Modern consoles have become much more powerful, and are closing the gap in performance with PC's. So it's possible to get an enjoyable experience from a console game. It really comes down to personal preferences, and budget. Some people like arcade style games, while others prefer hard-core, unforgiving simulations. It's a personal thing, and what gives you pleasure.
I have a PS2, and just like a PC, you can have fun relatively cheaply. Get a game, an inexpensive wheel, hook up to the net and get tons of fun online competition. Or like me, take the addiction to a higher level, with a serious gaming computer, high speed connection, and more expensive wheel. I can add a track like Mount Panorama to my GT Legends game, and wheel my Porsche 908 around the mountain. Let's see you do that from a console.

PC... if you have the money. Problem is you'll probably want to upgrade every year.

Battlefield 2, minus the idiots and bugs, is the best game I ever played. Now it's the only game I play (until Unreal 2007 comes out)

Not really.

You have to keep on updating only if you wish to run every new game at max resolution and details. I bought my current PC at 1999 and have only updated it once. It still runs anything I want just fine. Not with 1600x1200 with full details though. To me gameplay is what matters anyway, not the looks. I can still happily play Amiga 500 games, takes a minute or two to get used to the blocky graphics, but after that I don't even notice it.

Well I kinda got tired of going that route and once I got myself a job, I made a huge upgrade. Graphics card, processor, new monitor, everything. I called it a gift to myself. BF2 became a whole new experience.

Other apps, my computer runs much faster as well. It really depends what you want. BF2 is a resource hog (and terrible at making the best of them). I'm not a huge gaming fan anyway.

pRo, I used to do the same thing, kept my P200 until just a while ago. And I was happy living with that, knowing that once getting into the upgrade game, it was going to cost a lot of moolah.
But I'm a racing sim fanatic, and I had to dumb my graphics down to very low levels to get decent play. Until one night in a Nascar 2003 race when I drove right into a huge wreck. It was a league race, at Charlotte, and about ten laps into the race someone crashed big time going into turn one. I had turned down how many cars I could see to 12, and I never saw 13 until he was about five feet in front of me. At 160 MPH.
So I broke out the piggy bank, and now I have a very good computer where I can turn all the eye candy on at 1200 x 1600 and get great frame rates. I can even see the details of the chain link fencing at the side of the track. Not only is it nicer to see things in a very realistic manner, but it helps my gameplay. Since I have a faster computer, it draws scenes quicker, and sample my input more often. When I turn the steering wheel, it feels just like the real world, smooth, consistent, and fun.
Driving with a lower powered computer made me a better racer, forced me to improve my skills. But now I have a lot more fun, even though I spent a lot of money doing it.

Well, Dave, you sold me. I just bought a Dell Dimension 9150 back in Febrary. It was the same as their extreme games computer but shifted towrds the Media Center than gaming. So it shouldn't have a problem with games. I also have a cable net hookup, so I'm good to go there. That Momo wheel is great. I will definitely check out those leagues. Thanks guys!
