Bernie Ecclestone says Formula 1 still has too many teams

Post

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone believes the sport still has too many teams despite the departure of HRT. F1 will have 11 teams next season after the Spanish outfit's failure to enter the championship following an announcement they were up for sale. But Ecclestone told Reuters he would be happy to see another team drop out."It's just that 10 is easier to handle, for the promoters, for transport," he said. "We'd rather have 10, so long as we don't lose Ferrari."

Ecclestone said he had heard that HRT had gone into liquidation. Asked whether he believed it was possible a buyer would be found, he said: "I wouldn't think anyone would want to."

British-based Formtech Composites said in a statement last week that they were owed a substantial amount of money by HRT, the ownership of which they believed had been transferred to a Luxembourg-registered fund. Formtech added that HRT had initiated liquidation procedures on 12 November, the day they announced the team was up for sale, and had offered to pay creditors 30p for every euro owed.

HRT were one of three teams to enter F1 in 2010 following attempts by Max Mosley, the former head of governing body the FIA, to introduce a budget cap. The budget cap was never introduced and none of the three teams - which also include Caterham (formerly Lotus Racing) and Marussia (formerly Virgin) have scored a point since their debut.
Ten teams - 20 cars - is believed to be the minimum number F1 can have under new commercial contracts before a clause that could allow teams to run third cars is activated.

Ecclestone said the 2013 season would likely be 19 races, despite his shuffling of the calendar last week to make room for a 20th. But he did say there was still the possibility of Turkey taking the new 20th slot on 21 July. "I don't know - I'm waiting for a response from them," he said. The Turkish government ruled out contributing to the race fee a day after the country's motorsport federation said such funding would be required. Ecclestone told Reuters categorically that Austria would not happen. Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko said at the weekend that the company had reminded the FIA that it had a track with a full F1 licence, the former Osterreichring/A1-Ring which held the Austrian Grand Prix on and off between 1970 and 2003. He added that France appeared to be no longer in the running for a race

I was hoping we have a new team replace HRT actually. Thoughts on this everyone?

What I found interesting was ... "As long as we don't lose Ferrari". I wonder why he mentioned Ferrari specifically.

His ruled at France, Austria as well. So I guess we are really stuck at 19.

quite easy , one of his staff has done a cost /benefit analysis

most profitable number of teams ...10

where is the problem ...he was bound to make a straightforward , accurate statement at some point

Alternatively, he has inside knowledge that one of marussia or caterham is failing and is saving face for the sport now...

Alternatively, he has mal-intent towards one of those two teams and is laying the groundwork for it...

Alternatively, he wants to stimulate people to kick up a stink and make a political statement that they want all 11 teams to stay, because his actual motivation is to keep all the teams...

Alternatively, he's trying to strengthen his bargaining position with the teams...

Alternatively...

We don't have a clue what his reasoning is, but past evidence suggests that if he says something, he usually means ... well, not the opposite, but usually he's driving at some other angle he's working at, just not in an obvious way.

One more point. I wonder how much of an impact it will have (To have ten or eleven teams) on splitting the prize money.

May be its convenient for him to split money into 10 rather then 11? Dont know...

beside, how much coverage HRT got in 2012 compared to Redbull, Ferrari or Mclaren?

There is always a method to his madness. The reasoning will certainly come to light shortly. Something is up with Marussia more than likely. And...it is likely a bargaining tactic, or a hit out at potential investors.

Only 10 teams get it now.

Well, all the teams get a share of the cash... just the 11th (and previously 12th) placed ones only got "column B" money, which amounted to about €10m each.

In 1989, 39 cars tried to qualify for a race. In 1995, an FIA survey revealed 69% of fans wanted more teams to enter. Reason being, more cars on track = more action to watch. Kind of makes sense don't you think?

Having a fewer number of teams, plus having the entry conditions set so high, can only lead to further issues if some of the smaller teams hit financial strife. Imagine a year where 2 teams drop out. HRT is gone and no-one looks prepared to pick them up. And why would they?

With other racing series making good gains at attracting new manufactures and new teams - F1 runs the risk of pricing themselves out of interest for anyone. Why spend $500m (and the rest) a year to go racing on a global stage when you can spend a fraction of that and go rally or touring car or LMP? Sure, F1 currently has more prestige, but it's slipping and has been slipping for years. Rumours of bribes, back stabbing, gouging, rule meddling has meant a lack of big names wanting to join. Add to that a failed float and the underlying inherit weakness of F1 is laid bear for all to see. For all the glitz and glamour, you don't have to scratch very deep to see a very hollow and unstable foundation.

If wanting to reduce teams now is a underhanded technique to force decisions - then the above statements are true - why would anyone want to sign up to be blackmailed and squeezed? If it's not that, then it's flawed thinking - and why would anyone want to join a group where expansion is not the goal?
