Michael Schumacher to race in Karts in 2013

Post

http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/ ... s-in-2013/

According to spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, Michael Schumacher will race in karts in 2013, and not only as test driver, so he will take part in all the races of the season.

Its good to see that he still wants to keep alive his passion for speed. =D>

Le Mans is not going to happen for Michael. He has done that and is not interested any more. He also thinks it is too dangerous with all the different cars and some unprofessional drivers on track.

He has always loved carts and will probably always do some carting for leisure.

I find it a bit annoying by Schumacher to still and try to compete everywhere. It is clear for everyone that he had his time and is now growing too old. He should quit trying to compete, and certainly in the karts where his palce can be filled by some young talent with a future, instead of wasting a place just because he wants to have fun.

No offence to anyone, but he should just accept that he had his time, and give the younger drivers their chance for glory.

I have to disagree with you there. That's a pretty pessimistic view on something that could be applied to many drivers. Why not David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Jean Alesi, Heinz-Harald Frentzen...? They all competed in DTM once their F1 career was over, and it was clear that they would never climb the ladder any further.

At the end of the day, if you have the talent, you can enter any championship you have the skill to enter. As long as you have the hunger to race, bring the skills required, and are allowed entry, then you have just as much right as anyone else.

You could say that, because Schumacher is racing in karts, it's actually freeing up a space in the higher catagories for a new, young driver. And besides, it's not just him - there are many, many ex-F1 drivers still lingering about on the motorsport ladder somewhere.

What bigger glory for a kid then beating a former 7 time f1 champ.

It is regular and well known for drivers to go to these racing classes after their F1 career. But well there is a large difference between that and a 47 year old racing 16 year olds in karts. Schumacher has now 3 years held a spot at Merc just because "he wanted to drive F1 for fun", filling the spot that could easily be filled by a new, promising driver. And now he is doing the same, in a runner up class, a class where pretty much every future world champion goes through, and steals a spot from a young, promising driver who is on his way up. And that isnt even the worst part, the worst part is that he does that "for fun".

I'm sorry, but no. If he wants to race "for fun" let him go to a kart track and do a race with friends for fun, but dont ruin, or in a better case, delay the career of a promising young driver just because you are Michael Schumacher.

I didn't think Karts had limits on entrants. Its not like he is stealing a spot on a team it is more than likely his team.

Hell I still race now and then to see how much faster those damn kids are than me every now and then.

Marco Ardigo races karts in KF and KZ for Tonykart, the same team Schumacher will run for.

He is 29 now I think. I know there's a difference still, but most of the guys at the level Schumacher will race are normally professional karters at a similar age to Ardigo, not "some 16 year old". At KZ level most drivers are even racing in open wheel cars. He should be allowed to get fun out of motorsport once he's retired.

If for example Tiger Woods retired professionally, would people stop him from playing an open every now and then? The answer is no. Similar principle.

I dnt think him racing karts in any way hurts the career of any kid. It will throw more spotlight on the event and as flynfrog says, beating him will be glorious for anyone who does so. He may be past his prime but he's still good, and he's still Schumacher. Also, he plans to build a championship level karting circuit near Cologne, which would be the best in Europe. Isnt that a good contribution as well? That will surely help the careers of budding racers.
Besides, F1 has changed a lot since he first retired, and we all know how good the Mercedes was. Karting is still the same. The guy loves competition, and he ll do well here.

Schumacher wasn't in Mercedes for 3 years "just because "he wanted to drive F1 for fun", filling the spot that could easily be filled by a new, promising driver". He was there because he was the best possible driver that Mercedes could have, he wanted to race and there where no better prospects of young kids there. Certainly not overrated Di Resta whose talents seem limited now even if he has the full backing of the British press. MSC's contribution apart from being a driver who has a place in F1 on merit was huge outside the car as well, in terms of PR, media coverage, sponsorship etc.

I don't believe that story about "delaying the career of a promising driver". It's just plain wrong. There are at least 5 drivers in F1 who do not deserve a seat, like Petrov or Karthikeyan, I didn't see any calls for their retirement/dismissal. Then what about Webber? I could also say about other mediocre ones but let;s not go into that. Point is MSC was more than capable of competing at this level at age 43(!) as we saw in 2012 and many of us believe that he should be on the grid in 2013 also.

When Schumacher first raced in Formula One in 1991, there was one other German driver, Michael Bartels who endured an unspectacular career (in F1). When Schumacher retired in 2012, he had seen Frentzen, Glock, Heidfeld, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Sutil, brother Ralf, and some kid named Vettel enter Formula One. That is part of his great legacy, that he led the way and inspired other Germans to follow in his footsteps.

And now that his days as a driver in Formula One are gone, he is doing what he enjoys, racing. But even more important is that he is giving back to the sport and continuing to inspire kids to race. I wish some had read the entire article because not only is he testing for a kart manufacturer and racing, but he has commissioned a new world championship-standard karting circuit near Cologne. He intends to construct the best karting track in Europe.

I was watching the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals on TV, considered by some to be the world championship in karting. Not only were there different classes determined by the type of kart, but also age. And there was one class, the Masters, for drivers over the age of 31. Back in the grid, causing a buzz and adding legitimacy to the sport was Mika Salo.

I applaud Michael for giving back to the sport, and just doing what he still enjoys, racing.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.
