Werent the mercs doing it at Melbourne during practice last year when they were supposedly testing the DDRS?

People noticed Michael closing his DRS way earlier than usual while also commenting on the radio that it was "too aggressive" or something similar.

Perhaps the DDRS effect was too powerful on df/drag - and they were locking brakes if they slammed on the brakes with the DRS open? (The DRS shuts whenever the brake is touched as a failsafe, but there's still time needed for reattachment)

On the first day "sum up" video from sky the guy was telling us that Mercedes hit the limiter on the end of the straight.
So maybe he just closes it earlier to not hit the limiter.

btw. On the video you can see that he was driving without their DRD. So a negative effect of the DRD to the DRS which would lead him to close DRS earlier is not the reason!

It wouldn't be because of that. The limiter doesn't damage the engine - it's just that it means you have less drag than what your seventh gear is dictating. You'd still take the limiter over the increased drag of a closed DRS any day.

Sauber and Mercedes will start-off with aerodynamic tests, then setup-work and tire testing. Teams will want to put in as many laps as possbile, given the 80% chance of rain tomorrow. Nico Hulkenberg will test the hard, medium and soft compounds today. He joked about his team having had the supersofts returned to pirelli, because they wouldn't even last a lap on this circuit.
