The last time Red Bull and McLaren were doing basic exhaust layout comparisons was this time last year. The only way they might compete in the top 4 this season will be the tyres. And if they stabilize after a certain point in the season - like they did last year- Mercedes should not expect more than 5th in the WCC.
5TH? 4TH at least.

Very interesting! I have never seen the team this methodical. It's truely fantastic to see and gives me hope.

I love the use of laminate flooring on top of the cars floor, harks back to old walnut dash in my dad's old SL. LOL!

Maybe new parts that haven't been painted silver.

Two questions:

1)Everybody is moaning about this year tyres, but how about Hamilton`s times that he did yesterday on medium ones:

1:25.210 (lap 98)
1:28.702 (99)
1:28.184 (100)
1:28.884 (101)
1:28.986 (102)
1:29.747 (103)
1:29.033 (104)
1:29.697 (105)
1:30.125 (106)
1:30.253 (107)
1:29.934 (108)

Together with the out-lap & in-lap there are 12 laps so he had at the beginning of the stint at least 48-50kg of fuel and delta time loss is 1,2 sec !!! Why?

2) Yesterday they tried an 2012 exhaust solution sporting a cut in the bodywork just in front of the pipe exhaust:

Image

Could they have this slot in the bodywork before their exhaust pipe (in their Coanda exhaust configuration) and be legit? Coz Williams & Catherham solution is after the exhaust pipe and it`s illegal ...
Or maybe this solution has not benefits?

im not sure what the benefits would be.

I know they only run this solution yesterday to check there new exhaust system isn't cooking the rear tyres. Apparently there old coanda exhausts done this. So by running the old exhaust they could test the difference in tyre temp. If its much lower then obviously there cooking the tyres, if its about the same its not. This is according to teds note book.

astracrazy@ explaind well. That exhaust faring and extended exhaust tail pipe they've used yesterday was mainly to determine the influence of new semi-coanda exhaust. It was a quick fix. If they've wanted to copy Williams solution they could add one without changing the exhaust geometry in the way they did it. If you compare the pictures you can see that one exhaust aims into boat-tail section and the other (2013 semi-coanda) to the gap between floor edge and tyre.

That's heat protection on the lower wishbone. The wishbone itself is made from carbon fibre. And you can see that when the exhaust is pointing to boat-tail section the upper wishbone also has the heat protection. When Semi-Coanda exhaust is fitted, only lower wishbone arm needs heat protection.

this experimental variant of the exhaust seems interesting, especially the slot-gap in front of exhaust pipe cover

From Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Fans From BlogF1.it , "Mercedes have come up with a williams style solution. But they cover the exhaust ramp IN FRONT of the exhaust hole. You cannot see this in the picture above, which seems to be a hybrid version of the conventional an coanda version. So they install a flow conditioner for the exhaust which should be allowed as it does not effect the direction of the exhaust gases AFTER they exit the pipes."Image

Excellent explanation, thank you.
