McLaren MP4-28 Mercedes

Another "downgrade" on the car. Reverting to a much earlier diffuser spec with the gurney taken off the edges.

They also removed the gurney tab on the floor flickup.

So what is the problem with the "ride"? What exactly is he complaining about, is the suspension too stiff and noncompliant? I can't believe they've gone even stiffer?

Ride quality is obviously an umbrella term for a lot of factors but if anyone here can help understanding the McLaren ride issues I'd be most interested.
It looks like McLaren have more side-scrub on their front suspension than last year, possibly more than anyone else this year. Side scrub is lateral movement of wheel as it moves up and down. Up and down is intended, lateral is an unintended but inevitable consequence of the extreme drooping front a-arms. A-arms with lots of droop are necessitated by pullrod front suspenson, but Ferrari seems to have reduced the need for it compared to McLaren.

Don't know if this causes "bad ride" but it doesn't help. It can certainly hurt.

Illegal ride height

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/106081

The car must not have been running its 'plank' or it was but tge ride height was too low and would have worn the plank away in a race, any other thoughts?

Interesting that they removed the curves in the FW main plane and straighten it out. Usually that is a sign that they are gaining rear downforce. So the problems they are facing aren't aero-related, but bad driveability.

The ride height was probably fine with the fuel level they had, but had they brimmed the tank it would have grounded the car. I doubt they would be deliberately targeting an illegal setup, more likely that was their baseline setup and as they ran it they realised they needed to raise the ride height a bit. That can also help explain why they looked fast early in the tests but then didn't do any interesting times thereafter.

Names ending in 8 seem to be bad for this team. Remember the MP4-18?

You could be right, it was a M8 that Bruce McLaren has his fatal accident

Also the MP4-8, the 1993 car, not the worlds best car... :P
