Rules question about exploding engines

Post

IIRC, if an engine fails mid race, that team can replace that engine without invoking the 10 place penalty. Does the driver keep whatever position he was in, or does he only escape the penalty if he DNF's?

I'm curious about this because what if a race leader's engine explodes right before the finish line on a fresh engine? Why wouldnt they engineer the engines to last for 99.99% of the race?

You mean he crosses the line after his engine blows, but still in first place?

The place would count but he would have a 10 place grid drop for the next race because he finished.
