IE 7 Warning!

Post

Just incase anyone was thinking of downloading Internet Explorer 7, DO NOT DO IT! I just spent 2-1/2 hours on the phone with Dell customer support reloading all my software. The gentleman mentioned "..we've seen some problems with that, they still have some bugs in it." What an understatement. I lost everything. Accounting for both businesses and all pictures. (Even the complete Sharon file, much to mine and Manchild's lament.) Luckily, the bookkeeper has all but this months files and my ex has the kids pics, but still, stay away from IE7!

So what does the tech at Dell use at home? Firefox.

Who is Sharon and why MC laments the loss of her files?

I use Opera and I have hidden IE and FF where my children cannot use them on their computers, networked to mine... but if Sharon files are worthy and they need FF or IE, I may revive one of them for a while.

All it did here was install perfectly and actually turn out pretty decent for a browser. I'm still an Opera-user, but I can't say I mind IE7.

Yet another reason to use Firefox2 or Opera ;)

For once people should realise that, although Vista and IE7 do look great, they are rushed products with much of the original functionality left out to make it to the release date (even then after several delays, but they had to release it someday). How can you expect a rushed project to be good? :?

@Ted : well at least you still have one online :P

Ted it's good that you have important infomation backed up. I use a handheld Sharp Zaurus 2MB for business information that is not connected to the internet, for a wide variety of reasons. I am glad that your family photos are intact and available to you. Once again, it was very kind of you to warn us and try to prevent us all from problems. Most people would not have thought of their friends and tried too protect us from potential disaster. Thank you.

My own recipe for data preservation is to make a folder on hard disk out of any windows folder and backup data in it.

For example name it BACKUP

C:\BACKUP

If you need to install new version of windows or reinstall current one (without formatting) installation process won't affect non-windows folders and files on HDD. All you have to do after that is to copy that folder wherever you want.

There is also lots of other issuse with IE7 such as no security at all it pretty much invites hackers and viruses. I say FF2 but having not used Opera or others cannot comment on them

Got IE7 on the laptop and works just fine, no problems what so ever.

Yeah, I used it for about a month with no problems at all. Two days ago it started to not let me close windows when clicking on the red 'x' in the top right corner. Yesterday it began to open new windows or tabs for every topic heading I clicked on from the home menu here. When scrolling to the bottom of the page the entire page would open in yet another window. I couldn't close any of them or pull up the start menu to restart the computer. So when I called Dell the first question was " We've seen this before. Do you use IE7?"

But 'til it died, it was a fine browser.

I'm using IE7, no probs, its actually quite nice, the tool bar is a lot smaller so you get more of the webpage on sceen and less of the bloody useless buttons you will never use lol.

Security isn't bad really, just keep updating as and when its nessecary. That and get 3rd party protection. I use AVG anti-virus (you can pay, but their FREE version is pretty much on a par with Norton & Macaffe anyway!) and Spyware Doctor (which is payware - but bloody excellent).

As good as Firefox may be, Microsoft have such a monopoly on the market, unless you really know what you're doing, its always safer to choose their products, more people use them, so more people make updates or make websites designed specifically for their products etc.
