I believe short shifting is one of the drivers "inputs" in his arsenal.

Yes, engineers set up the car to drive fast in straight and curvy lines.......but the driver still control top 10 inputs for car's behavior in those 2 drive lines
- steering (my favorite)
- brake pressure
- clutch bite
- throttle
- DRS
- KERS
- dials
- stick shift....eeerrrr.....paddle shift
- cheating
and finally radio... JUST LEAVE ME ALONE, I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING pit communication because..... YES, YES, YES I'M DOING ALL THE TYRES. YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMIND ME EVERY SECOND!

What examples of 'driver controlled cheating' do you have? I would disagree that this is one of the 'top ten' inputs a driver has.

Back on topic - are there any race drivers who can give real examples of short shifting, why they had to (examples of reason/s - fuel, tyres, strategy etc), duration (number of laps required to do so, distance, time). That might open up areas where we can look for similar specific examples in F1.

As we can't ask an F1 driver - unless there's a lurker here who wants to pipe up - then we're left with finding real examples in similar scenarios and looking to see how well they would fit into F1 tech.

depends on driver's style, I think
for example some drivers use 2nd gear in 1st and last corner at spa, they don't need short shifting for the most part
but JB uses 1st gear in these corners (probably to reduce under steer pushed by engine), he short shifts every time exiting these corners and before hitting full throttle.

Tongue and cheek and kidding about cheating. But, what's A.Prost's opinion of how A.Senna won 1990 WDC in Japan or D.Hill's opinion of how M.Schumacher won 1994 WDC in Australia.

To a lessor extent, drivers ignoring blue flags or positioning their cars whilst warming down on the race line during qualifying. Just this last Malaysian Grand Prix, Fernando suggested after making a good start, he hit Vettel in the corner because he was almost stopping his Red Bull.
