Funny because if webber qualified 4th and Hamilton 5th they would've still ended up the same place!!
but if Webber was 4th, he would be put back to 7th, then Hamilton would be moved back 5 places promoting Webber to 6th. I think. Hamilton would have been the same in 9th. But not Webber.

Edit: Ray beat me to it. I was too busy thinking about it before i posted :)

It's not right to apply them that way, guy who caused a crash has gained one position (not that I have anything against Mark).

Thats a good point. I dont understand why Gutierrez got 5 places and Mark got 3. I guess its just down to Mark no taking out the car he hit. I really dont think a 5 place pen for a gearbox change is right, maybe 2 or 3 place. As Mark got only a 3 place penalty for turning someone round. He basically drove into the side of Vergne. As someone mentioned before, surely a better penalty would be instead of putting a driver back 5 places, maybe take 5 points from the constructors points. Although saying that , the driver is just a part of the team. You win as a team, and lose as a team.

What are the odds of a clean start tomorrow?

Edit: Raikonnen said that the Lotus is too slow. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/106916

I hope this isn't race pace too... I had predicted he'd win or atleats be on the podium.

How does a 3 place penalty become 2? A 3 place penalty should be irrespective of other drivers penalty. FIA regulations does not seem to do serve its purpose.

So what happens if (hypothetically) all 22 drivers get a grid penalty? Do they then just leave pole position and the first 3 rows empty?

Simple: because these were different, incomparable situation. Although Webber's fault was unquestionable, circumstances were quite different to Gutierrez crash.

Vergne went very wide and slow and the gap was there. Some might say Webber wouldn't be a true racer if he hadn't gone for the pass. I also happen to believe MW when he says he suspected Vergne might have been letting him through. The fact that JEV continued mattered too. I thought that was a rather harsh penalty.

We have two reference points when it comes to questionable IMO, strict penalties for wheel to wheel driving and collisions: for wet Hulkenberg bullshit penalty in Brazil, for dry Webber in China. It will be interesting to see if stewards will be consistent and apply the same standards for Alonso or Vettel. I suspect they (stewards) know which way the political wind is blowing.

I still see a podium of Kimi, Alonso and Vettel (might not be in that order) with Rosberg 4th, Webber 5th, Massa 6th, Hamilton 7th, Di Resta 8th and Button 9th....... I think im over thinking this and should just enjoy the race

Nope - Webber would then start 6th.
Haha that's right, what was I thinking.

Bets on Grosjean crashing at the first corner? He's kept out of trouble recently so he's due a little first lap collision.

for how long will you call him a crasher? :)

he changed his driving style in the last season and, as you noticed, he didn't cause much trouble recently. But if he crashs now ONE TIME, all will say he's a crasher

I remember back at 2005 or 2006, if I am not mistaken about the year, it was one of the first races with the requirement for 2,3 races per engine and something similar about the gearboxes. I don't remember the race, but I DO remember that I tried to develop a way o calculate the starting grid with such penalties.
The result was wrong, because according to FIA clarifications, there where NO PROMOTIONS after the penalty.
I will try to find the race.

At last someone speaking about the unfair it would be if Pirelli changes the tyres to harder compound
as some teams are asking.
