Fastest/ most ideal race car

Post

Since quite some time, the rules of F1 have been getting more stringent with time. With the advent of more technology which is pushing speed to new limits, the FIA has been keeping checks primarily to reinforce driver safety. But .. If allowed to go berserk and design the most advanced (with no cost or rules constraints) and the fastest car possible, what changes in the current design do you think engineers would want to bring about ? Considering technologies like Active aero, active suspension, CVT, etc. (designs which did very well but were subsequent,y banned) which have the possibilities to push speed to new limits, which of these would make the F1 the epitome of speed around a track. I've been thinking about this for a while and have kind of out in my own small list

- all wheel drive with individual torque vectoring using wheel hub motors accompanied by a smaller petrol engine which would provide power when required to the tear wheels
- electronically controlled traction to let tire grip always stay at the edge of traction circle
- active suspension which restricts any sort if body roll and change in tire contact patch with active control of camber, toe, etc
- active aero and advanced aeroelasticity to obtain optimum down force and drag

These are to name a few. I would really like to know what u guys think. Thank your

Didn't Adrian Newey come up with a concept for a computer game that was basically along those lines?

I'll hit Google and see if I can find it...

Didn't take me long...

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

But again, this lays focus solely on inducing higher amounts of downforce. It does reach very high levels of lateral acceleration but I'm nt sure why the car doesn't have more advanced suspension or a more optimised power train.

Lightness, simplicity and radical thinking – these were the bywords of Chapman’s designs...

Just keep in mind, F1 has generally not at all been the cutting edge of automotive technology... since probably the beginning.
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.

Also bear in mind a lot of stuff is on these cars now only because there is a minimum weight limit. Otherwise a lot of rubbish that is not wirth its weight woukd be stripped from the cars. Power steering, hydraulic gearboxes, kilometers of electrical wire etc etc. A lot of really nice toys like active suspension, hybrid powertrains etc might not even make it onto the car if the performance gains dont offset the weight penalty.

In any case, its a discussion that always reaches a deadend because the reality is that without restrictions, it would be possible to build a car so fast that no-one could pilot it.

But maybe without restrictions we could have car that doesn't need the driver, :D

Yea well that's the other possibility. If you load the car with vehicle dynamics aids then the driver wont have much to do.

I doubt that anyone could, in the short term, build a self piloting car which is faster than a top driver. I am yet to see a proper driver controller that will adequately control a simulation around a track on the limit let alone a real car.

I always think about the potential technological advances in safety that a lucrative 'driverless' racing series would deliver to the automotive industry. Doubt such a series would be popular after the novelty wore off though, unless they used the driverless factor to make impossibly fast cars.

Still would a much better waste of some eccentric billionaire's money than A1GP or another inevitably doomed F1-tangential racing series.

With unrestricted driverless cars, you will eventually get this...

Doesn't need to be controlled. Can just be this : http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YxHcJTs2Sxk

That's pretty much exactly what I had in mind, thanks for posting. I would be fascinated by an AI driver racing series
