Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Comparing the picture above of the W04 at speed and the pic below of the W04 on its in lap, we can see how much the front wing angle of attack shifts as the rear of the car squats under aero load.

IMO it isn`t the front wing. Тhe whole back end of the car is pushed to the ground. Look how small rake it has in the first picure. This picture must be taken in very high speed, when the downforce is huge.

A few years ago Mercedes were being slammed here for their really poor workmanship - particularly where the sidepods joined the floor. The fit and finish is now as good as McLaren's ever was.

And probably even more importantly the W04 is so much slimmer and cleaner in the rear bodywork than the MP4-28. The finish quality then allows the air to really profit from that.
I wonder where McLaren lost the plot on packaging in that area. Build quality alone doesn't do the trick. What it can do is to support good basic design. Or inversely with bad workmanship you can throw away gains from a good design.

So...tires falling off the cliff again? Maybe Merc didn't really find a solution, just the tracks and temperatures where more forgiving.

Things must improve though, as there are a lot of races in hot climates to follow. Can they do it?

No, I am sure they dropped the temps 10 degrees as they wanted to

I think this might have to do more with the changed tire profile not working well with the improvements they made for the previous tire profile

An speculation in spanish press was that one of the reasons why mercedes has high degradation on tyres was because of the disc brakes that Hamilton imposed on mercedes, they overheat transfering that temperature to the tyres bringnning the temperature a bit higher and cousing degradation

And in 2010, 2011, 2012 Mercedes didn't have high deg problems? I don't believe it. It's the design of the car.

it´s in the DNA yea.
Kinda shame as it seems the older tires maybe was their best shot at having a go this year but who knows.

I don't think that there was any cliff. The car just did not have the overall speed, full stop.

Bit of a nightmare race even though both got in the points, will the new tyres in hungary adversely affect the mercs or be a favourable change? what do people think?

Its not the brakes that's causing it. Unless Hamilton was telling them what brakes to use for the last 2-3 years?? And for the pace of the race this weekend they used a new nose and the old engine cover, I wonder why they decided to change after such a nice result in Silverstone.....

Hungary has a lot of low speed right, so they should fare a little better.
hamilton's brakes are not an issue, if it were his pace would be worse than Nico's, and he's been better in the last 3 races.
For Sure!!
