Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I don't think we'll see anything big. The coming 2 races are unique ones, requires much less downforce. They will be bringing specific packages. DRD is possible, although not likely to be honest.

At Singapore we'll probably see major updates.

And now i'm rethinking about sidepods, thay won't risk the reliability of the car for the rest of the season

Of course they will bring updates, a lot. Remember Wolff said they were going to cut the workforce they dedicated to this year's car to 50% back in May? They've built a new car, virtually, ever since.

I'm sure there will be updates that can be used on the 2014 car they can introduce this year.

What did Brawn mean when he said "We will decided whether or not to continue developing this car after Spa and Monza"? If they dominate in Spa and Monza then surely they will develop until the end of the season to go for the titles but if they do badly they will want to keep developing their car to prevent slipping from 2nd to 4th in the constructors championship because it's so close.

Whether it's close or not, if the title isn't there for a fight after those two races I'd imagine Merc will turn their full attention to the 2014 car, they were only hoping for the odd win this year anyway, so what they've done is way beyond expectations.

I heard they've got some trick new rear brake ducts coming, although the guy I hear it from works for a different team so I'm not sure if he was just winding me up

It all depends on Rosberg and Hamilton. If they can win (preferably Hamilton for a shot at both titles) they will continue.
That will put pressure on Red Bull who i´m certain wishes that everyone just drop what they have and focus for next year so that they can comfortably take another 2 titles.

It´s either Kimi or Hamilton that can defeat Vettel this year. Just need a car that is consistently as good.

I guess it depends on how they perform in the next three races.

Funny to read that people think that the monkey seat doesnt produce much more downforce while they where yelling "OMG" when RBR came with large rear brake ducts in the pre season.

The monkey seats creates more downforce but will also disturb the airflow on the diffuser and rear wing. Don't forget it sits on an area you want to keep as clear as possible and a slight change in terms of mm or degrees can make an huge different on the way the tail respons during a corner.

probably yes, i was wondering if one of the updates could be narrower sidepods+smaller radiators: then i realised that such a change can affect very much on the car reliability

They already have small sidepods. They will bring specific packages to spa and monza, cutting downforce and drag. I don't see any real updates coming before singapore.

so for spa and monza they'll bring new wings to have less downforce, I don't know if they 'll bring other things except "new" wings

Is the Auto Motor und Sport story that Merc could have a 100 horse power advantage going into 2014 plausible?
Or could it just be next seasons mind games kicking off early?

A 100 horse power advantage sounds near impossible with the strict engine dimensions, weight limitations, tyres (if this season is a gauge) and power harvesting. It doesn't even seem reasonable considering 2014's fuel rationing either, you need fuel to churn out the additional 100 horse power.

Thoughts?
