Button is a senior citizen in F1 context and he is also not a driver you could use to benchmark for all out pace.
What Ferrari need is someone younger and super quick, who can be nurtured into a "team player" cum potential champion. But they could always bring in another WDC like Kimi to make life difficult for Alonso.

Ultimately Massa has already passed his used by date with ferrari, so any change will be for the better.

I get the feeling that Jenson isn't too great at car development, every time he switches teams they never seem to be able to take the car forward.

His title at Brawn GP was just a fortunate fluke and not really on merit IMO!

Wouldn't a Kimi-Fernando pairing be F1's oldest pairing, by quite a bit? Ferrari wouldn't have anywhere to go after about 2016 or so when both would probably retire.

The more logical choice for me will be to bring in Hulk as Alonso teammate. But my heart is hoping that Kimi will get a chance to drive along side alonso in the same car.

The biggest loser in all this, IMO, would turn out to be McLaren, running without even a single top class driver. The team will have to produce something magical to be in contention for the titles. Even if the team produces something like a MP4-27, I doubt Button and Perez can do wonders with it.

Dear friends and ex-engineers from Ferrari just shared: https://twitter.com/RodiBasso/status/376928192453685248 Supported by Piergiorgio Grossi, ex CIO of Ferrari. Heard it here first, if true. I guess it's too early for the rest of the world, but I drink killer coffee:

I didn't believe in this possibility, but everyone around the paddock is saying on twitter that Raikkonen-Ferrari is a done deal.

If so, I hope Hulkenberg will land in the empty Lotus seat.

The fact that Eddie Jordan suggested it was done on BBC says to me that it is. The man has an excellent track record of sniffing out what deals are going on of late.

This Italian newspaper seems sure that they will announce Raikkonen's return on Wednesday.

If true, I am LOVING this. I am fan of both, and think they'll go down the wire. According to Adam Cooper, this also explains why Alonso has been a little irritable with the team of late.

- Button 19 January 1980, Raikkonen 17 October 1979 (wiki)
- Pace - you could say the same, although you might be surprised if they were in the same team
- former WDC - same

Who's this young and super quick? Hulkenberg, Bianchi? Not really. Ricciardo  ? Ferrari needed a solid, point scoring and manageable nr 2, this is what they will be getting with KR, using the same logic as RB, a bit temporary too.

No one really would say, before anonymous "senior team sources" emerged that BBC loved to repeat without own conclusion, that Alonso was under-performing or needed pushing in Q. On the contrary, he was over-performing. Let's say it's true - this is not the driver to push or bother Alonso, especially in Q. There might be some politics to it, let's change something, it's better to talk about it than how bad the car has been in the last four season and who's responsible for it, Luca Di Monte not Alonso. Better second driver is not Ferrari's biggest problem really.

Kimi Raikkonen has signed contract with Ferrari replacing Massa.
Base salary will be 20 millions of euros. The money for that transfer will be provided by Shell.
The contract is for 2014, 2015 and 2016 optional.
Fernando Alonso is the best pay-to-drive driver in F1 with the biggest amount of money behind him.

Raikkonen at Alonso would be sensational for 2014. At last a driver of the same calibre next to Alonso. I'm curious if he'll get his ass beaten like in 2007.

And Raikkonen to Ferrari would be quite sensible for both Ferrari & Raikkonen. Kimi will probably drive 2-3 more years in F1, before retiring, same goes for Alonso. If guys like Hulkenberg, Bianchi & di Resta hang around for 2 more years, they'll be prime candidates to replace them.

I am afraid that Ferrari's move with Raikkonen (driven by the ideal of both drivers scoring points constantly and so the team fighting for at least the constructors' title) will blow up the team and they will end up nowhere. Raikkonen won't take the "Fernando is faster than you" crap and Alonso won't support anyone but himself in the fight for the championship. And apart from that, we all know what happened last time Fernando had a teammate that was able to get him a run for his money.

Plot twist: Heikki to Lotus.

If Raikkonen goes to Ferrari then there must be wrong something ...I mean Ferrari having 2 drivers at equal status is not Ferrari. I am a big Kimi fan but what Ferrari need is someone to help them build a fast out of the box car. a car that performs everywhere. The years of Ferrari domination it was not because of having 2 equally fast drivers...
I still believe Ross brawn leaving Ferrari was the biggest mistake from the red squad...Domenicalli can't handle the situation...

If Hulk goes to Lotus and stay for 2 to 3 years, history says he would stand an absolutely great chance to get a Ferrari Seat. Here is a bit of history... Schumacher to Ferrari in 1996 (from Benetton Renault), Fernando to Ferrari in 2010 (from Renault), Kimi to Ferrari in 2013 (from Lotus aka renault). I would foretell... Hulk to Ferrari in 2016.
