Wasn't it a 1 year contract with an additional 1 year option?

Then again, maybe RBR held on to him until they were confident Vettel can do it all.
if not for webbers absence I doubt Ricciardo will be earth shattering....basically RedBull a 1 car team in top 4 and Ricciardo more of a solid points finisher .
I had expected them to hire a stronger driver than Webber ....

Its hard to expect much from a driver that has lost his motivation. Perhaps that comes with age.

I'm not surprised by the Ricciardo signing. I don't think it is a good signing mind you though. It's probably Mateschitz's way of putting the Red Bull Driver program to the test. I suspect they're going to find out they spend a lot of money without any real guarantee of getting much of a return on the investment. They got lucky with getting Vettel, but drivers like him cannot be created no matter how many programs you create. You can recruit as much as you'd like, but until the drive is in Formula 1, there's no way to know whether they will pan out.

The political situation at Red Bull I find quite funny, especially with Marko coming out with some public comments to take some of the pressure off Ricciardo. As if he kind of knows what's coming.

Can you, or anyone for that matter, provide a single quote that indicates Mclaren are even interested in Hulkenberg? This, along with overreaction after Korea is the most bizarre thing that happened around F1 recently. Yes, it was a good race but there were many similar or even better performances (even this race) with not even close reactions. There were also better drivers after better races without contracts and half the F1 world weren't looking for seat for them. Snowball of hysteria.

Now the weight issue that suddenly appeared after German press made it the sole reason for everybody not signing him up is suddenly the main talking point. Like Barrichello to Sauber. Even Red Bull appeared in that context (why now and not earlier, was he slimmer then?), nevermind Ferrari or McLaren, Lotus doesn't care of course because they don't care about anything, weight, finances, qualifying, health - as long as media buzz is associated with it they'll take it, at least in theory, they are the odd team again.

1. http://www.planetf1.com/driver/3213/895 ... Hulkenberg About NH and SP:
"I expect things to work out with Sergio," "We're not talking to Nico. He's doing a good job and certainly deserves a competitive seat next year, but we're not talking to Nico at the moment." and general "...the way it has worked out means the heavier drivers will be less attractive"

2. http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/heavy ... t-mclaren/ Weird title considering what's inside and based only on ONE Whitmarsh AMuS quote badly translated probably: "I only said that, next year, drivers would be hard pressed to be over 80 kilos." ""It's others who interpreted this to mean I was talking about Hulkenberg,"
Original: "Ich habe nur gesagt, dass sich nächstes Jahr Fahrer schwer tun werden, die 80 Kilogramm oder mehr wiegen. Andere haben diese Aussage auf Hülkenberg bezogen."

He is only managing expectations.

I don't think anyone is expecting Ricciardo to go in there and beat Vettel.

What do we think the chances are of Alonso still ending up at Mclaren?

Two articles on autosport today talking about the Hulk - Lotus link up. So it looks like that is progressing in the right direction. I hope he lands a seat there.

Maldonado wants to leave Williams (to Lotus)... but Williams have the last word with a watertight contract with PSVDA so he will stay.
Hulk can ride for Lotus, McLaren or ForceIndia (He turned down a Sauber offer), he wants to have clarity till the end of this month.
Massa is going for Lotus or Sauber, some want him in the Toro Rosso what will not happen, and i doubt that he is going to Findia as McLAren seems to influence the drivers decision there...

I hopw McLaren somehow gets rid of PER and gives the HULK a chance, if the will not happen I hope to see him in a Ferrari (and ALO in the Mclaren).

Like what?

The fact is he's going to have to get in there and hit the ground running against the opposition. He's in a Red Bull. Marko has started talking about him not doing much until halfway through the season.

I think RIC has every chance at being up the pointy end and very close to VET - we all saw what he did at the young drivers test a couple of years back, he was devastatingly fast and had no issues getting to grip with the RBR.

Considering the RB10 will be a completely new beast next year with the turbo v6 and no exhaust enhanced diffuser I believe it's going to be a very level playing field as both drivers will be learning to drive a very different kind of F1 car!

Magnussen says in the danish press that he is negotiating with a team about a 2014 seat. Of course he wan't say which team. And he says that they are not close to sign any contracts. But they are in serious negotiations.

I have no idea what team it is. I believe he said at some point that he would not race for Marussia or any backmarker. And Force India said that they didnt want a shortterm concract because they will not develop drivers for other teams. In this case McLaren.

A Spanish website says that Alonso will return to Mclaren in 2015, just when Honda returns to F1. I dont give so much credit but they claim that this is real and that it will be a official announcement.

They even mention the chance of an earlier return, just for the next season. Ahh...
