Magnussen to Ferrari then in place of Alonso. Experience + young talent. It all comes together now :o I liked how Force India responded to McLaren's attempts to put Magnussen there: if he's so good why don't you hire him yourself? We have plenty of options. What about Calado, Frijns?

Firstly they ruin smaller teams likely to hire young talents, then refuse proposal for more tyres for the rookies, then after additional half an hour in practice was added they announce that young drivers can forget about it and now (applies also for Ferrari-Bianchi and others) they want to put their talents in F1, good luck with that.

Ferrari historically does not hire new tallent. They want experienced, proven tallent. I remember the Massa link was a stretch for them, even though Massa had been at Sauber for a few years.

Alonso is starting the mind games already ahead of next season:

Alonso is stating facts, BTW imagine if Alonso was one second behind Massa for 1 race in 60, what a storm in a tea cup in would cause for pseudo journalists.

Anyway: while browsing reputable source called Wikipedia I learned that "Massa is a friend of Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille" - one of current Lotus sponsors  . May I suggest headline for dying silly season: "Massa in a pole position for Lotus seat thanks to watch maker connection" [And low weight of course, unless it works only against, never for, and only for one driver]

A good reminder is that Williams' contract is with PDVSA and not with Maldonado. If Maldonado gets too out of line, PDVSA might as well pluck him out and replace him with another driver (Rodolfo González being the obvious alternative).

Well, for 2.5 years Massa and Räikkönen had the same car and were pretty much equal, performance-wise.

These kind of comments would hunt him back next year
He should just concentrate on his job and beat Kimi on track

Massa on form in a confidence inspiring car is hard to beat for anyone.
He´s not necessarily downing Kimi but rather informing the public that Massa contrary to popular belief is one of the quickest drivers in F1.
It´s consistency that´s his main issue. As far as the statement, Kimi knows that already.

This comment from Alonso
"So if we have a competitive car we will enjoy the season and do very good things. If not, it will be very similar to this year."
It doesn't look like he is praising Massa, he is saying next year he will beat Kimi with the same way he is beating Massa now.

No - he's saying results depend on a car.

One more thing about weight and Perez, Hulk. Why is it always one-sided, McLaren (Ferrari, RB everybody or no one really) don't sign NH only because he's heavy but Perez's future earlier "wasn't good" despite being light? Probably because we have only German press sources and not Mexican ;-) . I don't recall anyone raising weight as a reason for not signing or for results in 2008-2009 when in 2009 Kubica couldn't even think about running KERS because of weight. These days we know how much Gutirerrez gains over Hulkenberg by being lighter, imagine that.

So let's again fill the blanks of journalism: since Perez is around Button's level in his first McLaren season, with more experience in a big team, knowledge of extracting performance and weight advantage in 2014 he's going to outperform almost elite driver JB and his position is certain and future bright. That's the rub, you can't push "your" driver during silly season into the seat occupied by someone else, therefore Perez is out in theory, weight or no weight. McLaren's "internal" games are another side and failed season doesn't help, it's not like these stories are leaking themselves "they're not happy" "he's not signed".

More seriously and speculative, the tyres worked in favour of McLaren signing SP, they expected top car and tyre management being crucial (like it was in the first half of 2013), Perez had genuine talent to tame them so that was supposed to balance any one lap deficiencies. Car was bad and after all the lobbying and problems Pirelli changed direction into conservative so now Perez might be less attractive for the future. Only one angle of course, it doesn't change the fact that getting rid of him would be another McLaren failure.

I kind of agree, though I would say this is a different Kimi - down on quali speed but a much improved racer.

Additionally, I feel that Massa was never the same after the 09 crash, so it is hard to make a direct comparison.

Nevertheless, I expect Alonso to win hands down.

My hope though, is that he ends up at Mclaren.

Thanks for the spam.

Meanwhile, back on topic.

2014 has so many fascinating stories lined up, the new engines, Ricciardo, Kimi vs Fernando.

Who do people expect to see lining up in the Caterham and Marussia? I know Bianchi was confirmed, and there is talk of Heikki returning, but do Chilton/VdG and Pic have enough sponsorship to get another season?

Clearly talking about the results there.. Not "look at my gap to massa, this is what is waiting for you kimi"

Button's comment to F1.com is a little strange...
F1.com: There are a lot of rumours around the staff movements for next season, not only about who will be your team mate, but also that there will be a top level technical person joining McLaren. Do you have any information on this?

Button: I am not involved in any of these processes, and Martin Whitmarsh would be the best person to ask. One thing is for sure, though, Ross Brawn will not join the team next season.
So if Button isn't party to the process, then how would he be so sure about Brawn? And even if he knew, why would he think it was his place to divulge it? Button's more savvy than that, I think. It almost comes across sounding like an ultimatum, as in an "over my dead body" sort of thing. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it. Did Button leave Brawn on a particularly sour note?

I don't think that is it. I think he was being blunt about all the RB rumors floating around and put it to rest.
