Drivers using their car as a weapon

Post

I saw this live on television and, to be honest, my jaw dropped. How do you think this young man (no.11 -Félix Serrallés) should be punished for his action of using his car to teach the other guy (no. 14 - Kevin Korjus) a lesson?

In my oppinion, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and I think he should be banned from driving a racecar. Harsh, I know, but if you do this in F1 (as Maldonado did a couple of times) it could end up pretty bad. If you did this in the '60s or '70s, most probably it would have ended up with dead bodies flying around.

Anthony Davidson had some interesting things to say the other day regarding the reckless driving we see in the video, as well as elsewhere. Here is a particular paragraphs that stood out to me...
All of which plays a part, he believes, in making racing on the tracks in F1 more dangerous. "They are borderline too safe," he said. "The FIA have done an incredible job, amazing when you think of where it used to be in the 60s and the 70s, and the cars are going faster now then ever before. The problem is, the safer the circuit becomes the more ruthless the driving becomes. So today there is such little respect for each others' safety on the track. They feel like they can bang wheels in a straight line, but 'the car is mega-safe – it will take it' is the belief and therefore you get this crazy, almost borderline reckless driving coming into play."

I'd add as an addendum to what he speaks of regarding circuit safety, being applicable to car safety as well. The trade off for much safer cars is that drivers have little regard for making contact with one another on the circuit. The belief is now that they are all indestructible, however misguided the thought may be. When the risk of death becomes more prominent, competitors will treat each other with a far greater deal of respect as any such stupid maneuvers can cause one, or both to be killed.

Unacceptable indeed, these are professional racing drivers, they shouldn't be behaving like this on track. Hell, when me and my buddies drive go-karts we don't go this far. #-o Take his points and give him another chance, if he fu*** that one up he should be banned.

Maldonardo has not got a punishment so this guy should not get one either.
In fact Maldonardo should have got one, but there we go inconsistency of Stewards.

That may well be the case.
Still, the fix should not be to make F1 or any other racing series effectively more dangerous again. Allan Simonsen is certainly enough for all the High Profile Racing Series for this year (and next year for that matter).

The fix to such behaviour needs to be simply a clear enforcement of the rules by handing out unmistakable and noticeable penalties. In this case for instance an immediate suspension from the racing series and revocation of the licence for one year or something of similarly noticeable severity.

^This, the penalties must be clear & severe, the stewarding from F1 and down is a bigger joke than evan what this young driver did.

Maldonado may be an idiot, but he never did something like this. It's one thing to have a lack of peripheral vision, or to make a sweeping move towards another driver, but this guy actually waits for him and drives over him. Disgusting.

Do you remember Spa 2011?
Dear FIA, if you read this, please pm me for a redesign of the Technical Regulations to avoid finger nose shapes for 2016! :-)

I do, that's why I added "sweeping move towards another driver". But he did not run over Hamilton.
