Adrian Sutil has secured a deal with Sauber to ensure himself a race seat for 2014. He will effectively make the inverse move of Nico Hulkenberg who joined Force India following his departure at Sauber.
Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.
If true - pity, it would be nice to see another media over-hyping of a driver to disappear but someone has to pay 2012-2013 bills. Maybe Ferrari in 2015 for Hulkenberg? (No, not for Alonso).
Is Hulkenberg even considered by Sauber? If not then maybe Force India, interestingly Williams is the only team no one's blaming for "not hiring" NH.
If it's true, I hope Lotus wrote a clause in the contract that sounds like "If at any given moment during a Grand Prix event session a wheel or a piece of carbon fiber larger than 2cm² detaches off the car of Pastor Maldonado, the driver will be fired immediately"
"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe."Murray Walker, San Marino 1985
Regarding Pastor Maldonado, there are concerns about the money he potentially brings. Shaky driver with a huge, yet shaky sponsorship.
[...]The government of Venezuela has frozen all disbursements of hard currency for race car and motorcycle drivers who compete internationally [...]
Venezuelan officials are investigating a sports currency scandal stemming from its Cadivi state agency, which is in charge of helping Venezuelan businesses abroad obtain currency.
Sports Minister Alejandra Benitez told a local newspaper that an initial investigation of the disbursements found that one unnamed driver received $66 million and that her signature had been forged on 60 disbursement files for hard currency.[...]
As Martin Brundle pointed out last weekend, there is only one venezuelan racing driver who would receive 66m, therefore leaving little doubt as to who the "unnamed driver", involved in this scandal, actually is.
If I was in Boullier's shoes, I'd take Maldonado. Hülkenberg is by far the best driver on the market, but he can't make up what 30 million a year can do for your development.
It's not the end of the world for Hülkenberg however, there's no guarantee that Lotus will have a winning car next year anyway. It's just as possible that with the loss of Allison, they could revert back to their 2008 & 2009 form and Sauber/FI/Williams becomes the strongest midfield team.

The sponsorship money for development is irrelevant if you do not have the people in place to take advantage of the money.
If it is true that Maldonado has signed with Lotus, then we should start setting the over/under on how many cars he destroys in 2014. I only think his lack of contact this season was due to the fact that he was towards the back of the grid, and wasn't all that engaged in driving.

It isn't him. First and foremost, the Ministry stopped sponsoring Maldonado after he made the jump to Formula 1.
2nd, the Minister herself has said Maldonado isn't involved.
Most of the people involved race in the US and have gone as far as to fake race results and news clippings, and Formula 1 it's way too notorious for that to work.

Maldonado and Grosjean in the same team? Pffffff.
Mind you, I can't see any option for Lotus as long as Maldonado gets his Venezuelan backers into some kind of financial shape. That whole Infinity/Quantum thing is a complete mirage that sounds very much like Qadbak.
Probably, Pastor Maldonado will have joined the Lotus F1 Team and in the meanwhile, the Quantum deal might have worked out aswell, doubling the jackpot for Lotus. With Raikkonen out, there will be way less interest in the team - don't forget Lotus also has Renault commercial work, with kimi out, that's out the window too.
Now Renault last year announec they have 'big plans' in Venezuela, building a factory there - not strange since Renault has great sales in latin america. With williams going for Mercedes power, that means Williams suddenly has no additional value, and a Venezolan driver with mercedes power in the rear loses it's 'charm'.
Makes sense that PDVSA is cutting their contracts with Williams, they'll jump along with Pastor to Lotus - Renault. And not the least, Lotus has been working hard on 'intensifying' their Renault partnership support more. That would bring a great business platform - and they'll need Pastor Maldonado - A Grand Prix-winner, actually - to achieve this.
The Maldonado deal thus sounds totally logical, Hulkenberg would be less logical actually, he just can't bring the 'business platform' Maldonado CAN bring. And even though Hulkenberg has shown great driving potential - so has Maldonado - even though I do concider him to be a bit too loose of a cannon on track at times.
But since Grosjean took control of his mistakes - crashkid 'first corner nutcase' now is a top 3 finishing driver with great potential.
Grosjean with the french connection and Total sponsorship, paired with Pastor Maldonado sounds legit and the perfect combination for Genii Lotus at the moment. Hulkenberg may be a good driver - but even if the Quantum deal would work out, that would still miss out not just the 30 million Pastor will bag for Lotus, it completely misses all the business platform benefits Maldonado would bring.
Hulkenberg another year at Sauber, or back at Force India to replace Paul Di Resta, who essentially, has brought zero results.
Grosjean/Maldonado will bring in a great financial start for the 2014 Lotus F1 contender. Remember; Petrov got on the Podium aswell and wasn't that bad a driver either - but did give 'Renault' the backing they needed - and a viable business platform. Don't be surprised if Maldonado or Grosjean will be on the podium the first GP of 2014.
I don't think you should underestimate Maldonado's capabilities. He was praised and hailed for his GP win, just like Petrov was praised and hailed for his podium finish and fending off Alonso in the championship final of 2010 [IIRC]. Petrov was a grey mouse in the Caterham F1 car. Maldonado a grey mouse in the Williams this year, backmarker team aswell.

F1 champions Red Bull could face a fight to keep ace designer Adrian Newey as Sir Ben Ainslie issued a “we want you” call for his British America’s Cup bid, writes Byron Young in Abu Dhabi.
The two are expected to meet when yachting legend Ainslie attends Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Newey, who masterminded Sebastian Vettel’s fourth successive title victory in Delhi last weekend, has already admitted he is looking for a new challenge and would “nervously” be interested working with Ainslie in the sport considered the “Formula 1 of the sea”.
“Someone with his design and technical experience would be invaluable,” said Ainslie.
After helping Oracle Team USA win the America’s Cup earlier this year, Ainslie is trying to put together a British bid to bring the event back to British waters for the first time in 160 years.
He said the coming weeks, up to Christmas, will be crucial in shaping the British line-up as they hunt for £80million in backing.
For those worried about Maldonado to Lotus based off Crofts tweet , he's just claimed Chilton is close to joining Caterham, a few hours after Chilton himself stated he was abut to re-sign at Marussia.
Yeah, Crofty's rumours don't make much sense. Maldonado's PDVSA backing conflicts with Grosjean's Total sponsorship (both oil companies), so I don't see them being in the same team.
The only way Chilton would be leaving Marussia is if Daddy Chilton sold his part of the team and moved with him, so Caterham makes no sense from that perspective. Now Chilton moving further up the grid to a cash strapped midfielder team I could see happening.
