You also are forgetting that the FW-20 and FW-21 were running the godawful Mechachrome engines. In the case of the FW-20, kind of hard to be competitive when you're using last season's engines that haven't been developed no?

Certainly, but the FW-21 came very close to winning at the Nurburgring in '99. Were it not for that rear tire puncture, Williams would have had a victory in that car. Ralf had a number of good drives that year. Had they had someone more capable than Zanardi in the 2nd seat, they would have been up to 3rd in the constructor's quite easily.

Geoff Willis and Gavin Fisher were no match for Newey, neither was the Mechacrome for MHPE. Moreover, some people say that Williams started to test their 1998 car way too soon, they should have spent more time to understand the new rules first.

No they weren't. You only need to look at what they produced in the BMW era with that engine. If Newey had that to work with one would hazard a guess that Michael Schumacher would have won rather less championships.

Everyone seems to say that teams survive just fine when Adrian Newey has left them, but the reality hits home once there is a change in the regulations and those left behind actually have to design their own car.

only to see Montoya setting the straights on fire but very little more in terms of results.

Certainly had Williams closed out the 90s with Newey producing the FW-20 and the FW-21 it's a possibility that JV might be a double or triple world champion for all we know. Then again, with the Mechachrome engines I'm not sure it would have mattered all that much. But with the BMW engines, a Newey package would have likely put a stop to any possible Ferrari 5-peat. Imagine Montoya as a World Champion? He certainly wasn't lacking in pure speed anyway.

Don't get hung up on the Mechachromes, they were just last year's Renaults, but far far worse is that Flavio somehow got the right to market the engines himself as "Supertec", without doing sh*t. This was at the time when he dated Naomi Campbell.

One of the things my job entails is reading through the tabloids so I can see what passes for popular culture.

Whenever I see pictures of Heidi Klum, all I can think (to my dismay) is about how Flavio knocked her up.

I give Flavio credit for that engine deal though because that was another cash grab that Ecclestone likely enjoyed seeing.
