Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

it seems to be counter intuitive to drop traction to make tyres survive?
I think the recent claim Sauber is killing them with their traction through much better gearing from lower speeds is contributing here...maybe they could not use the gearing due to the sacrifices made to their traction potential?

As in former years ,Mercedes seems to struggle to find winwin solutions when solving issues with the car-they compromise in away s giving up absolute performance for tyre life the same happened last year and maybe also the years before.

interestingly other teams seem to be able to find solutions giving them tyre life without dropping qualy speed.I don´t want to come across too critical here -they improved in finding the sweet spot of their car dramatically. But frankly they got it right only twice last year ....
RedBull had one or two races were they did not get it right .

Still, they are on course for second in the constructor's championship, I would have taken that at the start of the year. I just want to see them making places in the race even if it means losing a few Q3 spots, it's so depressing to see the cars struggling in a straight line.

Ham might stand a better chance this weekend.

How is it possible for something like this to go unnoticed for so long? Same thing happened to Vettel in 2010 and it took RB ages to figure out what was wrong.

Eh? For all we know it was cracked during the Abu Dhabi GP, perhaps at the same time Hamilton smacked the kerb and an ARB broke...

As said in the article it was found during the routine strip down post AD.

That somewhat explains why he was complaining "no grip" some time during the race. It was very Buttonesque and was disappointing to hear from Ham.

I believe all this DRD testing and data acquisition has more to do with W05 than W04, they've been testing it a massive amount the second half of the season.

Maybe the off road excursion at Monza was the cause of the chassis cracks?

Merc say they were large cracks so it would be criminal for them to be missed at the stripdown for 5 races. It will almost certainly have happened in AD, Brawns pitwall chat with Sky certainly suggested as much.
