Turbo waste gasses

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Turbo waste gasses

Post

Would it be possible to "over pressure" the engine intake using the turbo and use the excess waste gasses to blow the diffuser, therefore as the air flow would be nothing to do with the exhaust you'd bypass the rules. I can not see anything in the rules that says that excess gas has to go into the exhaust and nothing to say that you can't split the inlet (that's assuming you can create a usable pressure).

All the engine rules say are

"Pressure charging may only be effected by the use of a sole single stage compressor linked to
a sole single stage exhaust turbine by a shaft assembly parallel to the engine crankshaft and
within 25mm of the car centre line."

Sorry if this has been discussed I just can't find it anywhere.

This is the very first line og the exhaust regulations.
5.8 Exhaust systems :
5.8.1 With the exception of incidental leakage through joints (either into or out of the system), all (and only) the fluids entering the compressor inlet must exit from the engine exhaust system.
So all the air which enters via the compressor has to exit through the exhaust. So your idea does not work.
This is why you cant run a traditional blow off that vents out into the atmosphere either.

Look in this thread for 2014 exhaust talks.

yeh if they could use trick like that they might as well put fans on the cars, afaiu in the original fan car the fan was initially
put in to cool the engine that ran hot, sucking the car to the road was just a side effect later exploited

The fans sole purpose was to create downforce. The engine cooling thing was just an excuse not to ban it.

it was pretty much banned after one race, and the cooling excuse had some merit it did have cooling problems
And the effect of the fan can't have come as a surprise since the Chaparral 2J came way before it

It would be much more efficient to simply use the engine cylinders to extract this "excess energy" by expanding the gas pressure and transferring it to the drivetrain.

This was my original thought. But power and downforce have different duty cycles.
