I think it is an I4, tested as half of the coming LMP V8?

I think it will be a Flat 4 Boxer Turbo to promote their new road going idea
Porsche is working on a new four-cylinder petrol engine that would power its new baby roadster, the Boxster, the Cayman and potentially even the 911, the firm has confirmed.Outgoing head of R&D Wolfgang Durheimer said at the Detroit show: “We have a four-cylinder boxer engine under development.” He admitted that the unit “can be applied” to the Boxster and Cayman.Porsche had been expected to introduce a four-cylinder powerplant on its forthcoming small roadster, which shares underpinnings and parts with the VW Bluesport and a sister car from Audi.But Autocar now understands that Porsche has won an internal argument to get its own powerplant for the car. Sources say the flat four motor is 2.5 litres and has been producing around 360bhp in turbocharged form. Durheimer said the unit “could be applied if necessary to the 911. Our decision is, on the 911 side, we’ll stay with the flat [six]. But there are opportunities for the future.”Greg Kable

Looks a bit to short to be the head of a in-line 4. But I cant see the other bank is its a V engine.?

Edit: sorry its the one cylinder configuration he was talking about at the start. It only has one exhaust outlet.

errm ..this is not an actual full engine it is a single cylinder development engine ,don´t you think so ? we can see nothing really ,apart from the timing belt (!!!!) which just cannot be serious ....

Sure the carrera does not have a belt for the cams these days ,i remember the 924/944/968/928 used belts- maybe for ease of setup a belt makes sense on a single cylinder development setup-no need for elaborate chain encasement .
the boxer 4 is a fact for the small porsche sportscar the project was startet quite a while ago around 2009/2010 so it has gone quite a while since then..

My prediction was between 10.000 and 5.500 rpm which seems to be validated by the video. This would also indicate that we will get an inlet pressure higher than 1.6 bar, even allowing for a slightly higher sweep volume than initially predicted.

I think that a 2.5 L flat four will fit nicely into the Porsche and the VW Group philosophy. Audi and the rest of the group will probably go for an inline four in the long run while Porsche goes back to the traditional flat four. Tons of experience and heritage. Almost like a flat 2 for BMW motor bikes. You cannot imagine them with anything but a 2-cylinder boxer.

There's another video of the new Porsche during testing at Paul Ricard: http://vimeo.com/79848992

The revs will be somewhere between the 4700 rpm of the 3,7 l Audi turbo diesel and the 10000 rpm of the 3,4 l Toyota NA petrol engine as the Porsche is likely to be a 2 liter V4 turbo petrol engine. My guess is 7500 rpm for the Porsche engine.
Dear FIA, if you read this, please pm me for a redesign of the Technical Regulations to avoid finger nose shapes for 2016! :-)

I think it is a lovely sound. Very deep and impressive and nice on the ear. You are not likely to damage your hearing and it will not be audible from very far away. So such engines will give the circuits a lot less trouble with the environmental audits. I would love to see Ferrari back in 2015 with an F1 V6 design and being beaten by Porsches 4-banger. I do not see Porsche do a V configuration. Their heritage is flat four and this is the perfect opportunity to make a brand statement in line with a massive tradition. They would be very silly going V4 unless the boxer has some flaws that I'm not aware of.

a race-type V4 configuration would surely give a better race engine than would any flat 4
but would be useless for a road car, because of the uneven spacing of the power impulses
rather important at 2 or 2.5 litres

or wouldn't Porsche be going for the 'we race what we sell' angle ?

I remember that when they first had a clean sheet of paper and an open mind they came up with a straight 4 etc (the 944)

how much worse would a V4 be compared to the big bang I4s all the "racing" bikes brag about now?

I'm thinking that the CG concerns about boxer could be worked around they went for a configuration with exhaust on the
top and intakes between the camshafts, like this:
