Renault's depute technical managing director, Rob White, has explained what is the reason for Renault's lack of reliability, and the plans on how the company aim to resolve this in 3 weeks time to be ready for testing at Bahrain.

It looks like the majority of the drivers are struggling to get to grips with the amount of torque these new engines are producing, which begs the question.. how much can the teams be learning from an aero point of view if the cars aren't being driven anywhere near to their potential yet?
Still a lot I would think. Things like flo-vis and wind tunnel/cfd correlation I thought are often carried out on straights at a constant speed. I take your point but would imagine its still useful for establishing baselines and correlations.

1.17.8 with free drs use i believe (i didn't see someone using it till now), so yes 1.21 could be a target for quali-mode (engine full power, kers and mguh full power, free drs) but could be tricky and hazardous by teams point of view

Rumours that the Merc was faster than last years car seems completely unfounded at this stage.
Maybe they mean the straight line speed.. instead over a single lap?
Everyone should be faster in straight line speed, there is quite less drag. They are expecting something around 350 kph at monza

John Booth, TP:
"We're happy with our development, our rate of progress. I think people will be very pleasantly surprised when they see the car.
A good looking nose, maybe?
Again, wouldn't take to much notice of the actual "times" as last year McLaren were coming out towards the top with fuel adjusted stuff from all the pundits and well look how their 2013 campaign went...
Hope Mercedes does a low fuel run, just for the fun off it.
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."
It is me or Newey is complaining more than previous years, yesterday was complaining about the noses and how dangerous could it be and today are news reporting that he is complaining about the new batteries. It feels to me he is not as comfortable as previous years.
Mercedes - 50 (199 total)
Ferrari - 43 (86 total)
Renault - 6 (11 total)
so thats this so far today
Mercedes 881 kilometers
Ferrari 280 Kilometers
Renault 48 Kilometers
hmmmmmm if things continue like this Mercedes is going to be gathering a hell of a lot more information on the engine front than any of the other manufacturers!

Maybe, but i do think that ferrari engine and mercedes one have already found reliability onto dyno benchs and from now to the start of the season they will try to add some power, so 600 km for ferrari or 2000 for mercedes (at the end of jerez tests) wouldn't be so different among them. Instead renault seems to struggle a bit, and that's not looking good because the day of freezing is coming and they are going to spend that time finding reliability and not performance

Are they allowed electronic driver aids again this year? ABS and ASR?
Not had those for years.
My understanding this year is - The rear brakes are now fly by wire and are allowed to be controlled electronically. Whilst this isn't ABS or ASR it can change between how much the MGUK harvests and the brakes apply pressure to the discs. To slow the car down. I believe the control has to be performed using the FIA ECU.
Here's the regulation
11.7 Rear brake control system :
The pressure in the rear braking circuit may be provided by a powered control system provided that:
a) The driver brake pedal is connected to a hydraulic master cylinder that generates a pressure source that can be applied to the rear braking circuit if the powered system is disabled.
b) The powered system is controlled by the control electronics described in Article 8.2
I did wonder if switching between pads and MGUK could be used to create an ABS.
Although this would then be illegal
11.5 Brake pressure modulation:
11.5.1 No braking system may be designed to prevent wheels from locking when the driver applies pressure to the brake pedal.

Agreed.
All of the teams are saying that they aren't thinking about performance until Bahrain. Difficult to say that the current lap times shows the cars will be 6 seconds slower in qualy trim.
