Williams FW36 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It looks like it will work well with the low beam wing concept at the rear.

Pat Symonds hinting at much improved Simulation potential in recent years but admitted the base Problem was not the bad steady state calculations but their complete fail to realise those v8 engines back then would run a higher percentage under full load conditions requiring added cooling.... as predicted .the calcs are only as good as the work you have done in advance to specify your cooling demands.
You will rarely go into static conditions in a formula 1 car -so the whole exercise of calculating cooling demands based on exactly those conditions will lead obviously to wrong results. Furthermore one of the hardest=critical situations -idle - heat soak - are conditions teams will want to neglect in their dimensioning of cooling System and specifying of heat protection at the expense of reliability of course...quite surprising nobody yet started to Position big blowers at the front and rear Jacks to at least slow down the temperature rise when pitting .Yes ,Formation lap and grid are still a Problem anyways-but there is a finite number of cycles under excess temps before a component does suffer from sudden death....so everything should help here.

It could be a choice dictated by structure also. You'd want the mirror support to be very thin , but you do not want to have vibrations or datchement (a la montoya canada 2003) so you would go for a shape that allows you to be stiif and thin on the inner mount; it oculd be that the outer mount has no specific aero function

Last time that sort of design was used was the Brawn BGP001 and there was this sort of design on the Force India VJM01/Spyker V8III.

It may not be for a strength purpose, however i think its to align a air stream and help a high pressure or low pressure zone somewhere.

Looks really good. I do wonder however if Mercedes branding will be present. There's none on the Force India, and there weren't any on the Brawn.

Sure McLaren has, not sure why though. They have to pay for their engines now, so presumably mercedes has to pay for the advertising space... Perhaps, if Merc branding appears on this car, Mercedes bought the ad space (or gave Williams a discount on the engines, which amounts to same thing).

I think McLaren got their engines very cheap this year as part of the deal to release paddy Lowe early. It probably involved retaining some real estate on the car.
