Williams FW36 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They are suppoused to help attach the air to the sidepods surface.
Why would the air stall over the side pod in the first place, when they only have a gentle slope?

Because the sidepod leading edge has a small radius (local intense suction peak) and then the sidepod is very long, so the boundary layer grows and gets "tired" (that is, the layers of the boundary layer that are closer to the surface get slower and slower). With vortices you mix the upper faster layer with the lower (closer to the surface) slower layer

Is that some tricky thing on the floor or an optical illusion?

I think that is just the sun's reflection and no tricksy magics.

Something very similar what they brought in Monaco last season.

Sooo... Williams looks to be quick.. My CFD eyes are telling me that their speed may be due to their low drag philiosophy used on the car.

BTW did anyone notice that the turbocharger is partially housed in the bell housing of the gearbox?

Whoops. I checked back but must have overlooked it. Thanks for letting me know!

on topic:
Williams seem to be set to be competing with ferrari and mclaren for second best car. They seem to have an agressive cooling solution compared to the others.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that Williams actually had the best cooling of the Mercedes teams, can't seem to find it now though

Amazingly this car hasn't had many updates since launch, they might have held back for Australia!!!

A quick reminder that the car threads are meant to focus on the actual features of the actual car.

Discussion of lap times & tyres belong in the respective race and test threads.

Sponsors (ie Martini livery) in the team thread ... unless some of us think the go faster stripes really will improve top speed???? http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 539#unread

Comparing different cars belongs in the Gary Andeson random thoughts thread  http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 320#unread

For the avoidance of doubt, these threads are for posts about things you can touch or see - ie "what is it?" or "how does it work?"
